Any chance there will be a BOINC client for PocketPC platform? I leave my pocket pc (one of them) almost 80% of the day on the cradle with power to it, and it runs at 624mhz, so its not too terribly slow... |

Rosetta has a VMemory need of about 175 MB. That would be extremely much for a Pocket PC. |

The question is practicality. How many people would put BOINC on that platform. That is why the developers target Windows, Linux (x86), and Apple OS-X (well, and SPARC/Solaris). This platform set meets 99% of the computers likely to run BOINC. However, just like the days of SETI@Home Classic, there are people compiling the code for HP-UX, AIX, Open VMS, and a couple other target platforms. |

The problem with putting BOINC on a PPC is that handheld devices tend to try to conserve batteries. When the keyboard is not actively being used, the CPU shuts down its clock speed to extremely slow (like 1/1000 th of the CPU clock speed when the key board is being used). Thus a 400 Mhz PPC when it is running full speed is something like a 400KHz machine when idle. The work would never get done. BOINC WIKI |

actualy it has been discussed about alot of the newer decives like PDA haveing a decent amount of power... one of the problems is they are all desidned to reduce there cpu speeds deasticly to save battery life (even in cradle) and alot of times they never truly get up to there rated speeds... yes i would love to be able to pull out a pda and see it crunching even a prime number program or such but there are so many difrent opertating systems for them right now its probaly a pain to try to get someone willing to compile the system to work with one of the types let alone the 100's of difrent configurations or operating systems and yes even though they are fast they are also slow compaired to modern computers so it would take alot of there time to complete 1 work unit but for your sake i hope someone creates one for you that you can enjoy. myself i normaly just try to convince other people to run distributed computig instead |

Think that thousand of PocketPCs running boinc projects when charging at night. It would be a remarkable computation power. I think it worhts to work on this issue. |

While it's a nice idea, any such resources would be better directed to GPUs, or even consoles which i'd expect would result in increased production in orders of magnitude more... |

Possibly related is BOINCoid, the port of BOINC to the Google android phone. They have a similar idea of having BOINC run while the phone is charging, and hope that the computational power can be realized through installing it on enough phones. I'm not sure what the current status is, you'll have to check the website. |
