All:

I have BOINC running on a number of computers including Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 64-bit. I have one computer that I can not get to run BOINC and it is making me feel very stupid.

The only Core i7 in my farm will not run BOINC. It is a Windows 7 64-bit system with lots of RAM and SSD hard drives. I am attempting to run BOINC on the D: drive and I assume that is not an issue.

I just installed the 6.12.26 64-bit version of BOINC. When I launch BOINC or reboot, the BOINC manager says "Connecting to BOINC client. Please wait ..." and it will stay that way forever.

Is there a way to see if the client started? Does it report as a service or create a log file? Does anyone know of an easy way to troubleshoot this issue? I can run the commands at the command line and boinc.exe appears to run but BOINC manager does not find it.

Your assistance is appreciated.

I would try installing BOINC in the C: drive.

Can you try an older version of BOINC? I'd suggest trying 6.10.58...

I just installed Boinc on a brand new Win7 64bit installation so it is not a Windows thing, did you use the defaults when installing Boinc? If you chose any other option that could be your problem, I use the default directories but uncheck the screensaver box. You didn't chose a 'protected' installation did you? I think that is what it is called, Windows is very picky about that.

Have you been running BOINC previously on this machine? If so, perhaps you need to sign on as a specific user that you setup for BOINC and install the update under that profile. If not, perhaps your machine is defaulting to block the internal TCP traffic that the BOINC Manager uses to communicate with the BOINC client.

I am not using the default drive or directory with BOINC. It worked on this computer in the past but then through the upgrade, etc. it is broken.

I do not want to install BOINC on the SSD hard drives because they do not support TRIM and I fear all of the churn with BOINC could create some issues in a short period of time.

I guess I need to uninstall BOINC and install it on the boot drive with all default directories.

You should be able to install on any drive path you like. It is just a question of whether the original configuration has some conflict with your new setup.

So, were you able to get things set up the way you wanted? I think there are some directions somewhere on how to move an existing installation to another drive and path if you want me to hunt for them.

I don't care about moving the install. I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times on this system. I have boinc running on win7 64-bit running on another system with no problems. It is only on this one Core i7 where I have the issues.

I need to try a reinstall on the boot drives as that is really the only unique feature of that computer.
