I was reading an article in last Tuesday's Science New York Times newspaper about a medical engineer, and the article stated "[she} became a Howard Hughes medical investigator, a prize usually reserved for Nobel-worthy researchers in the basic sciences".

So Dr. Baker's association with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is quite a prestigious honor! :)

I've wondered what Howard Hughes would think if he knew what his fortune was being used for! The interest from the endowment based on his fortune, now at about 13 billion, I think, is used to support "Howard Hughes Investigators" across the country who are selected in nationwide competitions held every five years or so. This allows me, for example, to focus on research rather than having to write grants to get funding which can be very time consuming. It is Howard Hughes's money that we are spending now on servers and other hardware to keep up with the data you are all generating and to anticipate the further growth of the project.

it sounds nice to me that a prize is what helped get this runnin and started and i hope that we are able to give you enough results to earn another prize or to.. the bigest one is helping to find a cure for diseases or a better mechanisim to cure diseases
