Hi.

I just started rosetta a couple weeks ago and everything was fine. Now, for the past 2 or 3 days, I have been getting: Error, no work available for progress.

11/24/2009 9:00:38 PM|rosetta@home|Requesting new tasks for GPU
11/24/2009 9:00:43 PM|rosetta@home|Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

I use BOINC version 6.10.18

Any tips? Thanks.

Rosetta@home does not have a GPU application available. Note that the message you sighted specifically says it is requesting GPU tasks. The BOINC client will eventually figure it out.

As for the basic PC (not the GPU), there have been some periods over the last 24hrs or so where the project has not had work available for all clients requesting it.

oh ya i didn't even notice it said 'gpu'. i don't think i've touched any of the settings, so i'm not sure why it would be saying that.

regardless, it still hasn't downloaded anything for a couple days. i guess i will just wait a few more days, due to the second part of your reply.

It looks like 500K WUs are in the queue so I would hope you have some WUs now.

Is there any change in your status?

You may want to look at the messages tab to see if you are getting any information there.

Thx!

Paul

OK, so that looks like everything is OK, it is just that the project is having trouble producing work fast enough right now to meet the demand. BOINC will continue retries for you. You may want to attach to a second project to keep your machine busy with something constructive in the meantime.

That was nine days ago. I just ran out of WUs. Lots of these:

05/12/2009 10:09:21 rosetta@home update requested by user
05/12/2009 10:09:24 rosetta@home Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.

There are two different ways your client might contact the scheduler. One is requesting GPU work, which is what your quoted message indicates. Since R@h has no GPU work, these are not going to see tasks downloading as a result. The second way is for CPU work, which is how you go the tasks you now have.

A new feature in BOINC 6.10.x is that it recognize the videocard and determs if it can be used for number crunching.
Your card is capable (CUDA), so BOINC wil ask for GPU tasks.

Because R@H don't have a GPU app, you can't disable BOINC asking for GPU tasks.
In projects that have such an app, you can. :D

BOINC projects with a sufficiently recent version of the server software can answer requests for GPU workunits with something meaning none available, none planned for the next 24 hours (or a few days if desired) and temporarily stop the repeated requests from sufficiently recent versions of BOINC.

However, I've seen what may be a problem with this. On my laptop, I've enabled use of both the CPU and the GPU. However, the GPU is a sufficiently low-end one that none of the BOINC projects I'm interested in are currently offering any workunits for it. As a result, the BOINC 6.10.18 I'm running there goes into a state where it asks only for GPU workunits, again and again, for a few hours about once a week, even if it has exhausted its queue of CPU workunits. It MIGHT help if more BOINC projects were ready to send back responses saying no GPU workunits planned for at least 24 hours.

The GPUGRID project may offer some workunits that a 9600 GT can run, enough to keep it busy, but that's close to the lowest end of the cards they support. I've seen a few messages indicating that SETI@home is probably the only other BOINC project with GPU workunits usually available, and likely to accept that card.
