Message 62339 - Posted: 21 Jul 2009, 15:36:51 UTC - in response to Message 62338.

Everything was going fine for me until a couple of days ago, I can't get any new tasks.

7/21/2009 7:46:47 AM rosetta@home Requesting new tasks for CPU
7/21/2009 7:46:57 AM rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

It will just keep doing this over and over, I have also tried resetting project to no avail.

Kevin

Well, it finally redownloaded a bunch of stuff and minirosetta and one task.

yeah, it's hit me, too. Only received 4 new tasks in last two days and only on one of the puters. It had 8 in reserve at the time. The other has been out since day before yesterday. After looking at the forum, I haven't reset or anything, but I tried resetting before looking at the forum; without success. I will just keep it running other stuff until they get the servers operating correctly and we get back on board.

Same with me... I have 2 machines sitting here, one is getting work, the other one isn't. Both are running Boinc Manager 6.6.36. The Q9650, that has no problems runs 24/7, the i7 920 was turned off during day, in the last 2 weeks (it was just getting too warm in the room ;) ).
I reseted both projects I am running (LHC + Rosetta), no change... And all this stupid 'requesting new work for GPU', 5 out 6 times requesting new work. Doh!

I am sick of this all. I don't want to continously have to check, if everything is fine. Why can't it just run?!? What's so difficult about a simple program like that?!? I've got an 8-core machine idling for hours, because of this buggy manager?!? I thought there were brilliant software developers working on that. Actually, I could probably do better than that, although I'm rather familiar with SQL, than C++.

I am acually considering detaching all projects as well. This is getting ridicoulus.

Time to let the backup project run. They'll fix it eventually. ;-)

That's what I'm doing, too. That's what Einstein does for me, is to run when one of my primary projects is down.

No manager is going to do better if there's only intermittent work to get.

People with large buffers ought to ease them down while this scarcity is going on. I'm knocking mine down now.

Have been running Rosetta 100% and am also seeing "got 0 new tasks". This is bull****. I have a couple of water-cooled multi-core CPU's with their thumbs up their @$$e$ right now. I too am considering detaching if this doesn't get fixed really quickly.

I know all about that. It wouldn't matter if the manager was asking for a million WUs or 1, if there aren't any there to grab it's not going to grab any.

Edit: Try again now

@David E K: Ok, thanks, I hope you can fix this.

@Sid Celery: Tt's got nothing to do with the available WUs. As I stated before, I have to computers, one is getting WUs for a 2 days cache (as selected). The other one is getting 20 WUs at the maximum. This is not what I selected and it won't even last for half a day (remember the 2 days cache, I selected). I like to turn my modem off, when I am not sitting at my computers. No connection - no intrusion...

At least I got a couple of WUs. ;) This end seems to be working again.

But still I believe there is a problem with the BOINC manager. It is not requesting enough work. I just increased the cache from 2 days to 3 days yesterday, but it is not requesting work.

22.07.2009 17:03:22|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
22.07.2009 17:03:27|rosetta@home|Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

(I downgraded to 6.4.5 on that machine, just to see what happens...)
It is not requesting new work, although those 20 WUs waiting won't even last for half a day... Well maybe I should be happy, that my machine is at least no longer idling...

That could be helped, maybe, by resetting the RDCF to 1. Obviously the BOINC manager thinks those 20 units will be enough to meet your needs, that could be because the RDCF is seriously out of wack.

Thanks for your reply. I have checked the DCF in the client_state.xml. It was 0.96xxxx on that machine. AFAIR everything equal or lower than 1 is fine... I have changed it to 1.000000, but no change so far. I even detached from LHC on that machine yesterday. Rosetta is now the only project.
On the machine that is fine, the RCF is even lower (0.8xxxxx).

The Q9650 and the i7 920 are less than 2 month old, and to be honest, I had the same problems on the two machines I had before. I can't tell when this started and actually I didn't really care, because both machines were due to be replaced in the next weeks, when I noticed it.

Joe

P.S.: In my desperation, I just increased the cache from 3 to 5 days on that one machine - and now it is downloading WUs. 47 so far. At least I now got a cache for one day.

EDIT: Oh, come on, now all active WUs have changed to high priority. I give in. I'm done with BOINC.

Your problem is the version of Boinc you are using! On the newer machines you are using Boinc 6.6.36 that version, along with all 6.6.? version, has some SERIOUS scheduling problems! I recommend you drop to version 6.4.7 or something earlier. On one machine you are using version 5.4.9 and it seems to be working just fine. You can get all versions of Boinc here: http://boincdl.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/
You can also go to the home page and under download Boinc click on the All Versions link, 6.4.7 is there too.
I have been crunching for Boinc since the early Beta days, there are good versions and not quite so good version, there probably always will be. Find one you like and stick with it until you find something better. Distributed Computing is a worthwhile thing to do and if you can find something that you can believe in the project in, they you have a keeper! IMHO Rosie is such a project!!
