Hi. Please help me how to manage all my computers useing just one of them. Someone told me that I can do this but I have lost in this all settings. When I choose one of other computers what are on my account i should give his own password. After that manager shows me normal but blank screen whithout tasks and in the bottom I saw 'disconected'. If I swich host on my own appears me the password. When I gave it to notepad I was suprised: it was just ID of last computer I join the project. What's up? I tried to do this from first computer I joined to Rosetta. |

What program are you using, the one built into Windows or another one? I use RAdmin to sit at on computer and log into many others, it is not free though. VNC is free and many people use it. http://www.wikihow.com/Use-VNC-Virtual-Network-Computing-to-Control-a-Computer-Remotely here is a how to on VNC |

No... It's just BOINC Manager v 6.6.28 for windows XP, nothing else. It's on my base computer and most of the others. Next are 2 whith winXP and 2 with winVISTA. |

The problem is that I cannot tell from your original post what it is exactly that you want to do... If it is to run the computers from one desktop, then VNC is one of the best ways to go... using remote desktop will kill all CUDA/GPU tasks running until you log onto the machine locally and in some cases to restart it ... If it is to only control the BOINC clients remotely ... you can use BM once you have set things up correctly... there are directions around for doing that ... UBW BOINC FAQ Service UCB Wiki If you can find it you can also use BOINC View to control multiple hosts ... there is a replacement for BV being worked on though it is not yet available ... perhaps later this month... regardless of the method, you will have to create the local files on all the computers you want to control remotely (create one file set, test it to make sure it works then copy the two files to all the remaining machines ... easier that way). But the first question is which of the two do you want to do? |

I just want to control hosts remotly becouse my friends (hosts owners) cannot manage it - thay want help in computation but don't know how so I take care for their BOINC computation. So this way of controlling hosts is the most useful. |

If they use Windows Remote Desktop, right click my computer, left click properties, left click Remote tab and setup is there, may be the best thing for both of you. It lets you take over their pc whenever you want to and it will be as though you are sitting in front of their pc. Just pick a strong password!! |

As long as you don't do GPU computing on the remote machines this is fine ... if you do, no GPU task will now run for any project. Remote Desktop "virtualizes" the GPU and that means that BOINC cannot use it to run tasks ... Thus, VNC ... in either case, VNC or RD does allow you to log into their computer and work with it as if it was yours... |

I know remote desktop - thanks. Everybody tells me "simply the best". I should lern sth. about VNC. You said that it's very useful. Maybe in nearest future I will. Now I think about some new staff - what do you think about host with mainboard which has 2 places for i7 processors and about 8 GB RAM? Or in Your opinion better would be 2 additive laptops from China? (it costs about 150$ for one) |

What would be really nice is if from the BOINC manager you could control multiple computers _at_the_same_time_ instead of "Advanced>Select Computer>IP/Password." At a minimum have it save passwords (or is pw save possible and I have not found it?) A single console for multiple hosts, with each host on a tab, would rock. |

Laptop hard drives have issues running 24/7, they are just not made to do that yet. Some have no problems but their MTBF, mean time between failures, is shorter then desktop hard drives. Laptops are also not very upgradeable, while desktops are very upgradeable. Laptops are smaller and more portable, desktops not so much. Sounds like your laptops are cheaper. The i7 can crunch 8 Boinc units at once per cpu, so 16 in your example, the laptops only 2 if a dual core. Me I would go for the desktop, but I have the room and don't need another laptop. |

Thanks. I will think it's very riskable too. The time will show us the future. Now I think where to earn money for new computers :D. It would be useful for my relatives. Thay need strong computers for doing movies or make using office packs more quick and comfortable. Thank you once more for help. P. S. I'm so sorry for my english. I know it's very bad - please forget me. I'm just lerning. |

Your English is better than some, worse than others, don't worry so much about it. It is a whole lot better than my Polish!!!!!!!!!!! I was talking to a friend the other day who said that crossword puzzles helped his girlfriend learn English. I never would have thought that, but it does make sense. |

What would be really nice is if from the BOINC manager you could control multiple computers _at_the_same_time_ instead of "Advanced>Select Computer>IP/Password." At a minimum have it save passwords (or is pw save possible and I have not found it?) Especially if it allows running additional computers without giving them additional monitors. I have room under my table for additional desktop boxes, but not room on top of it for additional monitors. Anyone know a way to use just one monitor for more than one 64-bit Vista machine, preferably with GPU access to BOINC for all of them? Since the usual remote access method involves creating a virtual GPU, does the BOINC option to allow use of all GPUs get past the problem with BOINC continuing to use GPUs while remote access is in use? |

ANY application that "virtualizes" the GPU will kill its ability to run CUDA tasks... this includes remote desktop software and some Virtual Machine software. VNC does not virtualize the GPU so this is why it can be used to run remote desktops. Basically it has to do with the drivers and the hardware and the interference if some system software decides it knows best how to "protect" and share the hardware ... So, the answer is no... using the "Use all" switch does not affect RDC ... As to running and or monitoring just BOINC remotely there is the old standby BOINC View that still basically works to monitor more than one client machine at the same time. There is also a newer beta version being worked on that uses .Net (sadly, because this ties it to MS/Windows like BOINC VIew) that does basically the same thing ... I have not tried the latest version yet (have not been able to do much of anything these last couple weeks) ... At the moment I have BV running and watching the 5 computers in my house showing me the 44 CPU and GPU tasks I have in flight (the NCI tasks are at the other end of the screen ...) So, either program should run on your Vista machine and allow you to watch all of the others... I have 3 windows machine, one Linux and one OS-X ... |

Have you guys tried BoincView? It's not been updated in a while and I don't know if it has any GPU support but it works fine for me. You get a list of all the tasks running on all your (local) computers and you can initiate updates to the clients etc from it. What would be really nice is if from the BOINC manager you could control multiple computers _at_the_same_time_ instead of "Advanced>Select Computer>IP/Password." At a minimum have it save passwords (or is pw save possible and I have not found it?) Actually it's pretty easy to control multiple computers with one mouse/keyboard/monitor. A simple KVM switch is all you need. I personally prefer the startech brand of them, but really any of them are decent. The only problem I've run into with them is some of my Logitech keyboard's fancier features(media keys, macros) don't work with a PS2 KVM and I haven't tried with a USB one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817183302 - 2 port one for 2 computers. |

At a minimum have it save passwords (or is pw save possible and I have not found it?) You are correct except for those of us that have multiple computers in multiple locations. I have a kvm switch that works just fine in one room, but also use Radmin because I have computers on all 3 floors of my home. I even gave my boss one of my kvm switches since he now has 2 computers under his desk and he too loves it! |

At a minimum have it save passwords (or is pw save possible and I have not found it?) That's right, I hadn't thought of that. You could always go with an IP KVM, but those tend to be a bit pricey. For remote console access I usually use UltraVNC for local networks or www.logmein.com free for remote networks. I've never used Radmin, how well does it work? |

I've never used Radmin, how well does it work? It works great except for a couple of things...it is not free and it doesn't work on Vista or Windows7 machines, yet. It will connect on the Vista and windows7 machines, the screen just stays blank so you can't do anything. I am going to the logmein site and will look at it. |
