Upgraded to Boinc 6.6.20 a few weeks ago when 4 point something (I think) stopped working correctly. I am running Rosetta and Seti on Windoze XP.
Since putting 6.6.20 on I have two icons in my system tray. Windoze Task Mgr shows that boincmgr.exe is installed twice and using a bit of memory. I can stop one by "end process" but I don't want to do this every time it starts up.
How do I stop it.
From memory, when I first upgraded to 6.6.20 I had to uninstall and reinstall a couple of times. I also ran a windows clean install prog, but maybe something is left in the registry. I am not fully familiar with registries etc, and I am just guessing.
I have also had nothing from Rosetta since February, although Seti is running fine. Rosetta still has work to be done as my laptop has still been doing work.

Why did you need to uninstall and reinstall a few times? Do both managers launch on computer startup?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have checked my notes and the old version of boinc was 5.4.11. The message I kept getting was "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" I think it also said something about taking an alternate path to boinc.msi
I then went to the microsoft site to download their "clean uninstall tool".
And yes, both managers launch on startup. The only duplicated process according to task manager however is boincmgr.exe The other two boinc.exe and boinctray.exe are not duplicated.

Two places to look, start, programs, start up...if 2 instances of Boinc are in there delete one and only the one left will run. If only one instance, or no instances are in there, then go to start, run and type 'msconfig' without the quotes, and press enter. Then go to the startup tab and scroll down the list. You will find most things that load when your computer starts up including both instances of Boinc, uncheck one and then after saying okay restart the pc, you should only have one instance of Boinc running. DO NOT get uncheck happy in that list!!!! You can mess things up pretty badly if you do!!!!!!!

While true, there's a lot of advice out there.

For startup programs using msconfig go to Bleeping Computer or Startup Knowledgebase.

For services using services.msc go to The Elder Geek or Blackviper.

If you don't understand the advice in one website try the other or leave at the default setting, so even if you're not au fait with all the technicalities you can stay pretty safe.

My brother has an old and slow laptop that was taking 4 minutes to start up and nearly as long to shutdown and I managed to halve both those times for him without any downside. 90+ processes in startup manager went down to 40-ish and quite a few services were either stopped or made manual.

Definitely worthwhile, even though it takes a while to wade through it all.

Thanks for all that. I'll try that tomorrow when the brain's a bit fresher. Nearly midnight here in the antipodes. I'll let you know how I went.

It kept asking me if I wanted to start in safe mode and then I had tick a box to stop the restore screen coming up each time I started but I think I have it going ok now. I am not totally computer literate so I don't want to complicate things too much. The simple fix did the job.

Perfectly normal every time you change anything in MSCONFIG after you re-boot. Ticking that box is the proper thing to do.
