For at least the past 5 days all of my power PC based Mac computers have been getting no work from the project. Whenever they request work they just get the message "There was work for other platforms". Does the project no longer support Power PC based Macs? I have 5 of these actively crunching for the project, and another 4 waiting to come on line. Regards We Must look for intelligent life on other planets as, it is becoming increasingly apparent we will not find any on our own. |

ramostol's link above should be https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=3934&nowrap=true#51195 ;) I think the problem is that there's no rosetta mini version for the PowerPC, although seeing as KEL's post here says they're moving Robetta to BlueWaters which I believe is a Power7 based monster then maybe a PowerPC version of minirosetta is more likely? There are some rosetta beta jobs knocking about too, but I don't think BOINC is intelligent enough (server-side) to pick suitable jobs for a given machine - it just tries at random until the client-side accepts them AFAIK. |

Well it is a same that Rosetta has decided to abandon the Mac community. If you look at the stats Mac are major contributors to the project. The credits produced per CPU by Mac machines is an impressive number, especially when you consider that none of this software is designed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Mac architecture. I have over a million Rosetta credits, I am among the top users on Ralph, and now I have to go look for something else to crunch? It is even more annoying that the project team has not even responded to this thread. Kind of tells Mac folks where they stand on the project. its nice to see the heavy crunchers working for rosetta...hope things work out ok... Well it is a same that Rosetta has decided to abandon the Mac community. Hopefully this works out for you Mac people :) Cheers |

ramostol's link above should be https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=3934&nowrap=true#51195 ;) Thanks. Computer trouble forces me to use browsers obviously not behaving in a manner that I am used to... |

Actually, no. I have one intel machine and the rest are PowerPC, so it is not just the OS. I also have a few Windoze machines but they are not as fast as the Macs. We Must look for intelligent life on other planets as, it is becoming increasingly apparent we will not find any on our own. |

Mac PPC is not going to be supported with mini rosetta. We will still issue jobs with the old rosetta version but those will get totally phased out eventually as our group finishes the complete transition of rosetta functionality to minirosetta. Mac PPC is no longer supported by BOINC also. |

Mac PPC is no longer supported by BOINC also. Then why did they just released an update last month? Seems like you guys don't want our help. |

I was running fine up until Thanksgiving, after that, no units sent. BOINC still supports the PowerPC (I have an iMac G5), so if you don't want our help fine. I've detached and gone over to Einstein@home. |

Oh, we knew this was bound to happen, so we just have to take it in stride. The project is reworking its software, and it is understandable that they do not put much effort in supporting a "dinosaur" processor. Enough problems abound with the Intel to keep the project developers in shape, don't they? It is a fact that Boinc still supports PPC - my PPC is currently running 6.3.24, which seems to work just fine. The 6.3.x Boincs have even been more stable on PPC than on MacBook Intel. And, lest anyone should think that Rosetta has abandoned the PPC: 5.98 wus still arrive, but not dependably and regularly as before. Usually merely trickling in, but two days ago a lot of them was dropped in my lap, and at this very moment I believe I can download as many as my computer can take. We are approaching Christmas, I believe. However, the situation favours manual use of the "Update" button in Boinc to avoid the 24 hours fatal interregnum created by the "work for other platforms"-messages. This is of course an ideal situation for us laptop users with irregular internet connection... :-) My PPC now works for WCG and Rosetta and seems satisfied this way. |

Something I found that works nice to fix the problem where it cant find work on some days is to set the connect to server box to 7.1000 days so on days were it cant find work it will have enough from when it could find work. |

Let's see if I've got this right... I get the "...work for other platforms" message. I spend a good part of several days trying to fix the problem, including Updating; correcting server addresses; Updating; Detach from project; reattach project; etc. And all this time, Rosetta could have issued some kind of message to PPC machines: an email, perhaps? Easier yet, they could have sent it directly to my Boinc manager! Instead they did nothing. No attempt to warn me. Did I get this right? |
