Is it possible to write off the cost of electricity used as a charitable donation? NO.. I believe it is not possible because you are not paying the money for the electricity to a charitable organisation. What you use the electricity for is considerred irrelevant. |

I haven't talked to any tax experts on this yet, but I believe it may be possible /if/ you start a corp or non-profit dedicated to the task. Probably not worthwhile for most individuals. Can anyone confirm? |

I think it would be neat if someone did it just to show it is possible. The next step would be to get a major corporation to join up and defrey the extra electricity costs with tax incentives. I have tried every place I have worked to no avail. Interestingly, the security issue has not been the biggest problem. It's more about cost cutting. Too bad. |

You could propose a project to do such a thing here: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_and_Melinda_Gates_Foundation http://www.answers.com/topic/bill-and-melinda-gates-foundation http://mr.caltech.edu/media/Press_Releases/PR12714.html http://beta.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/default.aspx |
