I'm having problems with the Rosetta mini screensaver. Once active there's a 80% chanche it won't shut down, leaving me with a black screen. The boinc client and cores themselves continue running but the screensaver is not responding.

I've had this problem on my laptop (XP x86) and workstation (XP x64).

The other rosetta cores seems to have no problems at all. (and the graphics are much nicer)

I'm having problems with the Rosetta mini screensaver.
{...}

I've run into this also, but I thought it was a machine-specific issue until now.

As a workaround, I have been succesful with the following:

Ctrl + Shft + Esc to force the task manager, the mouse acts a little strange, but it is there.

On the applications tab of the task manager, the Rosetta application will be listed with the parenthetical "not responding"

End the unresponsive task, which seems to be the screen saver, despite that not being in the name.

I have not yet lost any work with this process, nor have any of my results returned as invalid.

As always, YMMV

I've done the same thing for several days now. In frustration also aborted all the mini rosetta jobs...

I have the luxury of running a few dedicated crunchers. They are computers I don't use on a day-to-day basis, except to check the progress of Rosetta and/or RALPH.

If I had to work on and/or routinely use a computer that was running Rosetta, I would categorically not use the BOINC screensaver.

I know that the screensaver is a low priority for the developers. I understand that it is secondary (tertiary, quaternary ?) to the scientific goals of the project. I respect all of that.

That being said, I have always (two+ years) found the screensaver to be problematic for Rosetta. I have only my own experience to go by, and that experience is purely anecdotal (i.e. no data to back it up), but I find I get fewer errors when I don't run the screensaver.

Bottom Line:
Instead of aborting the mini-rosetta jobs, I personally would abandon the BOINC screensaver.

I'll have to look into this.

The minirosetta screensaver should be more stable than the rosetta++ screensaver in theory since it uses the latest BOINC graphics api and is a separate application. But it is still under development.

It would be nice to get more information about this problem. Is it the screensaver application that is locked up or is it the minirosetta application which may effect the screensaver? The screensaver application name starts with "minirosetta_graphics".

The next time I perform the "workaround" I will try to get some screen shots. I will definitely take note of the exact names involved.

I also grabbed a screenshot of the taskmanager, but I don't know if that would be any more helpful that what has already been posted.

Also, FWIW, the workunit I was crunching at the time of the screensaver glitches:

wuid=165647509

The plural is deliberate, as the screensaver has crashed many times in the space of a few hours.

Additional information: The monitor is prevented from going to standby by the hung screensaver.
