Ok, so I stopped doing any BOINC stuff for a while due to the mobo in my computer having issues. Now that I have some new hardware, I decided to go with Vista x64 so I could use all 4 gigs of ram. So I downloaded BOINC and saw there was an x64 version. And during the Rosetta program downloads I noticed that the cruncher seemed to be an x64 as well. So is it really crunching data in 64 bit? And if it is, is it crunching that data faster due to it? I ask as if it does allow for faster crunching it just gives me more of a reason to use x64 on future computers and all, and it'll give me a reason to use the copy of XP x64 that I own and never really use. So anyone have any info on this?? Thanks! |

AFAIK there's no 64-bit Rosetta application. I believe the common consensus is that it wouldn't run significantly faster (and probably not any faster - it might well run slower) if it was 64-bit, although it could give them more precision should they require it. |

Ah, it is but isn't it seems. The client is called x86_64 at the end, but it is running in 32bit mode. It had me confused there. |

Prior to them slapping that label on a 32b app. If you had 64b and requested work, you'd get "there's no work for that platform", so it's a cheat to allow 64b OSes to participate. |

Well I'm glad they did that then. Was just hoping it was going to mean that I'd be able to get more crunching out of my cpu time, more science in less time is better afterall! But I'll take it just working as some science is better than no science! |

You can check out all the versions here. Clearly, there is a 64-bit version here. On my XP x64 edition, it runs as a 64 bit app (no *32 on taskmgr as differentiated from the 32 bit apps) As far as computing on the 64-bit, I am not sure if the developers made use of the extra memory access bits. |

Amrit, those are the BOINC versions. Rosetta is controlled and invoked by BOINC. But the Rosetta executable is the same code as the 32bit version. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

it's still so ? or ... |

it's still so ? or ... Yes, so far as I know, development time is going towards the hang issues, quirks with mini, and problem CASP tasks right now. But I think the mini application will be the avenue towards a 64 bit client, so it's all steps in the right direction. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
