this thread

Ethan I believe started this whole mess (R@H) by offering computer time to the biochemistry department, at least it's who I blame, as I lie in bed trying to work out if I could cross a genetic algorithm and repulsive particle swarm algorithm to find the global minimum, while scratching my head over how the bond angles have anything to do with the energy function, worrying about quantum chemistry that should help if you just added hydrogens to the PDB structures, not to mention the amino acids that I have looked up to find out what will join with what. Yep I definitely blame Ethan :)

My head hurts :P

well 1 thing is for shure if i could buy it for that price i would do it, cause with this rate of the € to the old and weak $ it would come somewere around 600/650 euro for a 8 core. thats realllly cheap :P

Long story short I didn't research a link I was given. . the deal is still 'ok'. You can get a dual dual-core for what I mentioned, the 8 way machine is around 1225:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=04&dgvcode=ss&c=us&l=en&m_8=80s&oc=bscwfk1&dgc=CJ&cid=7420&lid=197374

Apologies for posting it, but I deleted it 2 minutes later so you must really love these forums :)

Don't sweat it, I wish I would have known you were interested in this type of thing.

When you stated "8cpu Xeon workstation", I interpreted that as "8 socket" not "8 core". And I would certainly love to find an eight-socketed server for that price, lol !!!

Anyway, back on October 15, Dell had the following deal (8-core cruncher), and the only reason I didn't buy was I could not get a straight answer if the unit would support the new Xeon 54xx series, and fb-dimms are just too expensive.

Here's the old deal, pretty much what you posted, so "yes", this type of deal IS possible. Now that I know you're interested, I'll let you know what I see:

Actually, with your link, you C A N can get an 8-core server/cruncher for $779 !!!

(Albeit a Xeon 5310, not 5335. But bang-per-buck, go with the 5310. And who knows, maybe you "can" use the 54xx series in here, then flea-bay the 5310's and purchase some 54xx's if you need greater horsepower. If Dell were / are going to sell this same server for $779 (or possibly $729) with the 5410's instead of the 5310's, I'd be all over it, lol !!!)

Look closely:

Quad Core Intel® Xeon® E5310; 2X4MB Cache, 1.6GHz, 1066MHZ FSB add $0

2nd Processor
DISCOUNTED UPGRADE! Quad Core Xeon E5310, 2x4MB Cache, 1.60GHz add $0

but then you also need more memory to get it a good cruncher, you have no O/S and, well a 16gb HD would do.

if you look around, there are some decent deals on fb-dimms ("decent" relative to regular fb-dimm prices, not the ddr2 dimms they're practically giving away for free now, lol !)

os? linux = free. and at least here in the States, every once in a while MS has opportunities for free copies of Vista. I've received one copy of Vista Business, and am about to receive two copies of Vista Ultimate.

if you're justing crunching Rosie, you should be fine with the included 80gb hdd.

You're not going to send a man to the moon with this thing (although, back in 1969 maybe you could have, lol!), but they did sell it at one time for $729; and it includes an on-site warranty.

All in all, a good price for what you get. And "if" it is capable of accepting the Xeon 54xx chips, then just wait for the price of those to drop, and you've got a cheap upgrade path.

but then you also need more memory to get it a good cruncher, you have no O/S and, well a 16gb HD would do.
