Hi,
I have an old k6-2 500mhz. I'd like to make it a 24/7 cruncher but the problem is, it doesn't have a nic card. I know i could buy one on ebay for 12CAD but since it is equipped with a dial-up modem, i was wondering if i could use it to give this computer access to the net. I have another computer equipped with a dial-up modem. Both computers are running windows XP pro. I don't care if it's slow, where I live, in Québec, electricity is clean and inexpensive.

Thanks you.

I don't think I made my question clear in my first post. My question is how could i use my computer that have a connection to my lan to share it's connection with another computer using a dial-up modem. If it is of any importance, the computer with the nic have a static internal ip and is connected to a router with dhcp.

In short: Lan to 1st computer through a standard nic and modem to modem from 1st to 2nd computer.

I hope it is more clear now!

Any help doing this would be most appreciated.

If possible, I'd prefer modem to modem but if not, I'll have to try usb to usb.

Well, if you don't want to purchase a NIC card, then I would suggest using a null modem cable (serial port to serial port). There should be a way in Windows to connect that way using Internet Connection Sharing. I've not tried this before, but it's the only way I can think of that will work.

It is possible to get one modem to "call" the other w/o a dial tone, but it's tricky and requires manual timing on your part. So, that would not make a good option for a permanent arrangement.

i understood your question ;) I've just never heard of a modem to modem connection without a live phone line in use. A direct USB connection, or as DJStarfox says, you can use the serial ports, and you can probably pick either of these cables up quite cheaply, although i guess you might as well just buy a nic if you're gonna spend money!
