If I have a computer with a busted ethernet jack, is there still a way to get work units to it? if so, how and once there done how do I upload them? IF I do get the ethernet jack to work agian, is there a way to hook it up to my laptop and run the internet off the desktop from a wireless laptop? also, whats the best way to get a laptop to perform for crunching vs. a desktop...and whats the best wasy to get a desktop to perform? Help my student project?!? |

There's always USB or PCI modems you can buy to replace the ethernet socket. Or you could copy the "BOINC" folder from program files to a USB memory stick and then on to an internet connected computer, download work then reverse the process. However, only the internet connected computer will show up on the website stats. It's what I do and is fine if you don't care about credits for specific machines and more about the science being done. If you look at my statsyou will see I appear to have 2 P4 machines. This is the same machine and is the internet connected one. The work gets done on a AMD Athlon64 3000+. HTH, matt |

How do you connect to the internet on your laptop? USB/ethernet modem, or do you have a router? |

Hi, first of all: why don't you just get yourself a PCI Etnernet card for the PC? Just stick it in a free slot and you'll have an Ethernet port again. These things just cost a few dollars. Christoph |

If I have a computer with a busted ethernet jack, As mentioned, a <$10 ethernet card will get you going again, or you could just make the desktop wireless (as well as the wireless laptop) with a PCI or USB stick, then use a wireless router. IF I do get the ethernet jack to work agian, is there a way to hook it up to my laptop and run the internet off the desktop from a wireless laptop? You mean internet connection sharing? If you're running windows there's a wizard. Otherwise, a cheap router will do the trick. also, whats the best way to get a laptop to perform for crunching vs. a desktop...and whats the best wasy to get a desktop to perform? Laptops will generally not perform as well as desktops, just because laptop CPUs tend to be designed more for lower power consumption than raw performance. However, a newer laptop CPU will generally outperform older desktops, as you might expect. Best way to get desktops to perform is get some good parts then overclock them; but you must ensure that the system is stable before running BOINC on it, or else you'll return rubbish results. Or else just buy top-end to start with, but not everyone can afford to do that. Crunching Rosetta as a member of the Whirlpool BOINC Teams |

if your laptop connects to a wireless router then you can either get a wireless pci card for the PC or a normal ethernet port (cheaper and easier to set up/use). I'd only go with wireless if there's a bit of distance between the PC and router and you don't want wires trailing. You don't want a usb modem because you've already got a modem/router that your laptop connects to. Your best bet is a replacement ethernet card which will be a couple of £/$ |

I thought maybe you where talking about an ethernet to usb adapter....yea, I guess. anyways, wouldn't that slow down the wireless? Can anyone tell me (in detail) which files I should put into the other computer to get the work units done. Help my student project?!? |
