Message 43776 - Posted: 16 Jul 2007, 21:16:13 UTC

Hi all,

My new homebuilt computer (AMD dual-core running Sabayon Linux based on Gentoo) was clicking along very well on Rosetta -- averaging about 600 WUs/day until last weekend. Suddenly the project wouldn't send me work.

I'm getting an error message that I don't have enough disk space allotted to the project. This is on a 250GB hard drive with about 100GB of free space. My default setting was to allot 80GB to Rosetta.

I have tried changing my Rosetta preferences many times and running the update command, but the server still refuses to send new work to my machine. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks,
AndyAtlanta

try reducing the disk space options in the online preferences to the minimums and then hit 'update' in boinc.

Thanks for responding. I appreciate that you're trying to help.

I reduced my disk usage all the way to 0.1 GB and I still got the same error message. I'm totally confused because I've been running Rosetta for more than a year on 3 different machines without encountering this error. I don't understand what changed to confuse my Boinc manager.

Do you have preferences set up for more then one location? The messages that appear as BOINC starts up will help you determine which location it associates with that machine.

I seem to be having the same problem.

which runs windows XP and I have given it 5GB to use with saving me 3GB and to use at most 1% of my hard drive. Whats wrong? I think (if i did the math right...) that maybe I should be using about .5%...is that right?

A simpler solution, uninstall-reinstall. Works for most things.

Go to the advanced view, click on the disk tab. Shows all the space used by BOINC for each project. Looking at my Windows PC I'm current using 30MB for Rosetta.

1% of 27.91GB is 27MB for BOINC and all projects. So I think you've cut BOINC pretty thin there.

yeah - you should set that a fair bit higher than 1% - if you put 10% there's little chance rosetta will ever use anywhere near that (i've had one running for over a year and it's less than 60MB). Other projects might though.

I am set at 20% and it BOINC with RAH use a total of 73.07MB of space on my drive.
Thats with a 6 day total of work units set at 6hr run times.

OK all, I finally figured it out. Here is a printout from my preferences screen:

Use at most 220 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.2 GB disk space free
Use at most 90% of total disk space

I was understanding these phrases 180 degrees wrong. I thought this meant that BOINC should use at most XXX GB of disk space or Y% of disk space. What it really means is that your COMPUTER should use at most XXX GB or Y%. So set those values high -- see what I did above for a 250GB drive.

My BOINC manager finally got happy when I set those variables high instead of steadily decreasing them!

Lately I've been downloading a lot of files from the internet, which must have triggered one of the disk usage variables in the first place.

Use at most XXX disk space is the maximum allocation that BOINC can use.

Leave at least XXXGB disk space free means BOINC will always leave at least this much room on the drive.

Use at most XX% of total disk space means BOINC will use no more than this amount of disk space.

dcdc, I hear what you're saying. But I kept reducing those variables lower and lower... like .5 GB, .1% of total disk space, etc. The server was still saying that I had to free 87500 MB before BOINC would get any resources! So I went in the opposite direction -- setting the variables at 220 GB, 90% disk usage, and the server sent me new work the next time I updated the program.

This problem occurred in the first place because I downloaded some large files (maybe 50 GB worth). I still had about 70 GB on the hard drive, but BOINC quit working and sent me into about 4 days of confusion.

that's right - if you set 0.5GB then BOINC can only use a maximum of 0.5GB. It needed more space and that's why you had a problem. You needed to increase those variables to give BOINC more space. Which you did!

OK, I guess I'll just have to shrug and move on. But I find it odd that the server would repeatedly tell me (before I burned a handful of DVDs to move files off the HD) that I would have to free 134857 MB on the HD before I would get any new work! Rosetta takes only a few MB on my machine. Even after I burned all those DVDs and deleted the files from the HD, it still told me I had to free more than 85000 MB.

That's what led me to believe that the disk usage settings apply to how much capacity must be free on the hard drive -- not to how much Boinc will use.

Yes, and so the point is that the BOINC message seemed to report an exceptionally LARGE amount of space being needed.

Is it possible it was showing KB rather then MB of disk space?

You can check the disk tab in the advanced view and see how much space BOINC is actually using for all of your projects. How much is it now using?

If the message shows the wrong amount of disk being needed, you could ask about this on the BOINC boards. They will want to know which version of BOINC you are running. Looks like your Windows box is on 5.8.16.

No, in the messages screen of BOINC Manager, it was telling me that I had to delete more than 135000 MB before BOINC would get more work!

In that screen, I have never seen BOINC use more than about 20-25 MB of disk space.

BTW, I have a Windows box in my wife's office, but it's running BOINC just fine. The problem was with my Sabayon Linux box with a dual-core AMD 64-bit. That machine was pumping out about 500-600 WU/day until this happened. But I'm back up and running now.

Your Linux box is on an older version of BOINC. 5.4.11.

I guess now you know that the precise amount of storage reported isn't always correct.

I'm still a bit puzzled about how you figure you are completing 500 WU per day on a 2 CPU machine, when each WU runs for at least an hour. In fact yours seem to be using the 3 hours default runtime (see your Rosetta Preferences). So, seems that 24 hrs times 2 processors, divided by 3 hrs per task should mean you do about 16 tasks per day on that machine.

Perhaps you were referring to your RAC?? That is your average credit per day. Different from work units (which are now called tasks).

Okay I went ahead and changed my usage to 20% and to use no more than 10GB and to leave at least 3...

I also changed the connect to internet server or w.e you call it to .01 per day, should I do that?

also, what is "Leave applications in memory while suspended?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes'"

right now mine is a no.

after I did all this I went ahead and updated my rosetta and I got this message.

7/20/2007 9:55:33 AM|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user
7/20/2007 9:55:33 AM|rosetta@home|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)
7/20/2007 9:55:38 AM|rosetta@home|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 509]
7/20/2007 9:55:38 AM|rosetta@home|Deferring communication for 4 min 2 sec
7/20/2007 9:55:38 AM|rosetta@home|Reason: requested by project

Do I have to just wait for it to connect or is there a way to force work units to me?
