Hi Everybody, My BOINC is set to crunch all the time in the background (not just when screensaver is on), and my screensaver is actually set to a blank screen, not to rosetta. When I go in BOINC and click on show graphics, the Rosetta graphics show up very quickly. This makes me suspect that they are loaded in memory at all time (even when not in use) and that they potentially also use CPU cycles even when not on screen. There is also the preference: "Percentage of CPU time used for graphics (not selected defaults to 10)" which seems to say that 10% of CPU time is used for graphics. Can someone confirm that the graphics are always loaded in memory and using CPU cycles? And if so, my suggestion is to allow us to turn them off completely in the preferences and use that memory and those cycles for the science. Thanks. |

When you don't click "show graphics" and the screensaver isn't running, it doesn't use any CPU cycles. The 10% in your preferences refers to the usage when the screensaver is running. To completely disable the graphics function, you have to install boinc as a service. |

as tom says, if your computer isn't displaying the graphics then they aren't using any compute power. They probably load so quickly because rosetta_x.exe is already running and that's also the thread that displays the graphics. HTH Danny |
