I have not used Linux before yesterday. Today, I have created a directory and downloaded a file from BOINC which is has a long name with version and architecture like info, with a .sh extension. So what do I do with that in order to make it run?

I followed this thread of Tony's.

"Stupid guy installs linux to HD for first time"

I got it to run. I never did figure out how I could close the manager so it runs in the system try like I have it running on Windows.

Unofficial BOINC Wiki page for you to take a look at too. I found their instructions more confusing. I'd edit the page, but I don't understand the install process well enough.

Synaptic (if your distro uses it) should also have a one click install for you. But it's an old version (5.4.11 I think).

Thanks Kathryn, that had at least enough to get it running, attached and crunching. I do, however, have a console open with it active in, and would like to be rid of that.

mh it should work.. if you got stuck in the console press STRG + C. This should NOT stop the prozess but throw you out of the terminal without cancelling the progamm. (when it was startet with "&")

good luck :)

If I try to run gedit or emacs from the console, then appending the & does start the program and allow me to continue to use the console or close it.

The instruction that came with BOINC says to use run_manager to get it going, this is what I am doing, and it runs, but leaves the console hanging. run_manager is a shell scrpit, not an executable.

I tried to fire the executable from KDE, but it said I should use run_manager.

Right now, I suppose it is not a big issue. I first had access to a Linux machine 2 weeks ago, and am trying to figure it out with some web tutorials and a hazy memory of a UNIX system I worked with briefly 15 years ago. It'll come.

Here's what I did. Note: I don't know if this is necessarily the "right" way to do it. And definitely notice the lack of use of the terminal...

I followed the install instructions on the unofficial BOINC Wiki.

I put in in my home directory because I didn't understand the whole /usr thing.

Once you follow all those steps above and you want to start BOINC...

Navigate to the directory its in. Double click boinc then double click boincmgr.

The first will start the daemon and the second the manager. No terminal windows that can't be closed. Plus you can close the manager and have the daemon still running.

Now if I could figure out how to get a shortcut (ehhh... do they even exist on Linux) on my desktop so I don't have to keep opening my home directory, I'd have it made.

:)

In Ubuntu (7.whatever) I just installed it through the Add/Remove programs.

All setup and running, starts at boot etc.

Though I have to adjust my speedswitching program (Intel Pentium-M) to force it to full speed else it runs at the slow 600MHz when idle. But that's a linux 'feature' I guess.

It is the older 5.4 version but it works fine for rosetta. The newer in beta version of ubuntu has the 5.10.x/5.8.x version there but it has for some reason not been brought back (backported ?) to the release ubuntu version.

...
thought I would go google it (sorry serach on it)

seems 5.8 now backported, but not 5.10
https://bugs.launchpad.net/feisty-backports/+bug/112570
off to go update it then.

We are talking about running the GUI (BOINCmgr) right? if so, open up the file browser/manager. Navigate to the BOINC folder, double-click the file "run_manager". You will probably get a pop-up with several choices. Select "Run" (not "Run in terminal").

It's that easy.

Heh.

I can never do anything the easy way :)

For some reason double clicking that never has worked. I choose "Run" and the computer just sits there and looks at me. And I stare right back at it with a questioning look on my face.

See. I have to be difficult. I've got 5.10.8 running :)

I don't mind starting it the way I do. I'd just like to know why it won't start from that run manager file. Not that I'd *understand*, but I can nod and smile with the best of them.

FWIW, It's Ubuntu Feisty Fawn with the latest patches applied.

I use Fedora Core 3 and 6 and they both run just like 'zombie67' suggests. Starting the manager starts the client. You can just start the client but as you can't see what is going on I prefer the manager.
The Boinc version makes no difference to Fedora.

That's exactly the same version I am using.

Perhaps your permissions got messed up? This is what they should look like:

mystique:~/Desktop> cd BOINC/
mystique:~/Desktop/BOINC> ls -la run*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 zombie67 zombie67 53 2007-06-09 21:43 run_client
-rwxr-xr-x 1 zombie67 zombie67 56 2007-06-09 21:43 run_manager

Make sure your userid is where mine is, and make sure the permissions match "rwxr-xr-x"

@Kathryn, are you running the 64-bit Ubuntu? It just dawned on me that my 32-bit Ubuntu's will run boincmgr, while my two 64-bit Ubuntu's will not. My 64-bit Windows will run boincmgr.

eek... well I see the problem (or I think I do)...

kathryn@Galaxy-Linux:~/BOINC$ ls -la run*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 52 2007-06-23 23:08 run_client
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 55 2007-06-23 23:08 run_manager

...it appears to be owned by root. (or am I even reading this correctly?)

And what the heck is all of that after the ls part. I know ls. But I don't know those flags.
