I'm just in it for RAH since I read that in the Seattle Times I think it was.
Before that I never knew or had heard of DC before.

Primarily I am in it for cancer research, but I didn't know that hadn't started yet. So I am crunching the other stuff they put out until they get around to cancer. Might as well put my system to good use while it's sitting idle.

Message 42947 - Posted: 1 Jul 2007, 8:20:54 UTC - in response to Message 42821.

I'm one of those persons who move from recommended to recommended. And I encountered this situation. I moved from 5.8.15 or 16 to 5.10.7. I don't use Vista, I have XP. I searched for a vbs script in my startup folder, didn't find one. It happened to me a week ago, I also initially blamed XP, before I read these threads. It hasn't happened to me since then (I haven't downgraded). Anyway I don't think this is a vbs script or Vista problem.

I'm seeing one other report of this as well. Will keep Rom up to date on both of these reports. Thanks for your input.

This morning on the machine using experimental 5.10.9, the manager closed itself. the B remained in the systray until I hovered the cursor over it and it disappeared. Boinc.exe and the applications remain running. I've taken screenshots and sent logs/txt files to Rom. It was 3 AM west coast time, so I'm waiting for him on that machine at this point. boinc is still running and I don't need that machine for anything, so I'll let it sit until I hear from him.

None of the machines has had the desktop crash since starting these tests.

Astro, the B remaining in the notification tray (systray) is not a BOINC fault. Well other than the fact it shouldn't be closing itself (crashing I assume). Most programs have their icon remain there if forced to close until the systray get a refresh prompt, i.e. when you hover over it.

I've had the explorer vanish bug, I just cannot remeber which computer it was, I think it was WinXP but I've also probably had both the VBScript and shortcut, cleaned that up and it's never happened since.
Touch Wood.

talk about buggy software!
I cant get the boinc manager to load in
something about configuration

but if i click on the boinc client it will run, but no graphics interface of boinc
so reverting back to 5.8 since i dont have a copy of 5.10.7 or 8 i think it was that was stable.

found 5.10.8 on a external website, so back to where i was
think i am going to wait on downloading anything new until its all settled.
i don't have any of the issues with disappearing system tray icons. so might as well stay with this one.

5.4? wow...talk about not updating and following the old saying, if its not broken don't mess with it.

lol...he shouldn't have put that version out without testing it.
really kind of a bizzare thing using the boinc client and not manager.
isn't there a archive page or something, so that if we have a stable 5.10.8 and .12 acts up, we can go back get .8? I found it on a external website. So now keeping a copy handy on another partition and the desktop to revert back to.

the "boinc Alpha" group is specifically designed to be giunea pigs. We see this about once every 15 or so versions. He usually fixes it quickly and reissues it. stay tuned

WCG runs several disease specific apps which definitely used to include a Cancer app. Unfortunately they have a server problem at the moment so I couldn't verify currency of said app. Of course you may not want to run WCG as it is associated with M$ (Strange as it may seem I have seen such opinions expressed).

I am currently running version 5.8.16 and just came across this thread. After clicking on the link that was given for 5.10.7, I saw this message: (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING).

I think I'll wait before updating until they tell me it is safe to do so.

hmmm...looks like about 3 weeks according to the posts here and thats running 24/7 with a few reboots in between due to installing other software and MS updates. I always came back to a clean start again never any problems. Graphics work fine, all other functions work fine.

Hi, Windows 5.10.7 was released as a proper release but unfortunatly a bug was found, quite a major bug that had not shown up during testing.
This is where 'explorer' would quit for no apparent reason and so giving you just a blank desktop. (brilliant for the dedicated cruncher ;-). So they put it back into the development version.

It was hard to track it down and seemed to happen mainly to people who had gone through some of the development versions before hand where various things, that are now not in the client, where used.

The bug was found and fixed eventually.

But it has not gone back to a release version as they fix cosmetic and a few other bugs noticed since then.

In general though there is nothing wrong with the client, most likely less wrong with it than the older versions now since it's is all just development upon the older client and nothing major has really changed.
The major changes are scheduled for the 6.x.x releases.

Just to add a few links
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php all current latest version in developent or in release

or

FWIW, anyone can log bugs to Trac with an account.

And you can find the change log compiled by version here.
