That is the release for
Windows (32bit - x86) (support is now dropped for Win95 and WinNT 4)
Windows (64bit - x64)
MacOS-X

Linux is still in development though this version is available in the development section.

Major Changelog
Grid based views.
Advanced preferences dialog.
Project list in the attach to project wizard.
Improved Windows Vista compatibility.
An Uninstaller is now included with the Macintosh BOINC Manager distribution.
NOTE: BOINC may NOT start at startup if you are running Windows Defender (WinXP, WinXPx64, WinVista, WinVistax64). This issue should be resolved in a future version of BOINC. In order to have BOINC start automatically you'll need to install as a service. On Vista the user account will need to have administrative access to the system.

Please, update immediately!

Why?

I looked at the BOINC release notes and there is nothing later then 5.8.16. I want to see what I'm getting before I get it. (Been bitten before you see).

Official sites official release notes.

Yes, I know. That is what you posted earlier.

Those forums I pointed you to are *also* the official BOINC sites. Notice how both the site you listed, and the links I listed are both at boinc.berkeley.edu?

The link listed was for the release notes for the 5.8 line in general. The release notes for 5.10.7 are as follows:

New features Grid based views.
I put 5.10.7 on a new host that I just added--and comparing it to 5.8.16, there's not really much new. The only differences I've noticed myself are that the % done for each WU in the "Advanced View" (referred to in some places in the new version as "accessible view") now has a graphical progress bar behind the % indicator; and the project list in the "attach to project" wizard, which is definitely nicer than copying and pasting or typing in the addresses myself. (Oh, and now you can customize local general prefs easily from advanced view, rather than from simple view only, and some options have been added to that.) However, there is not really any reason, as far as I can see, to upgrade from 5.8.16, unless you REALLY want any of those features, or have Windows Vista or a Mac. From what I see in the change log, there's no differences except better compatibility for Vista, an uninstaller for Mac, and a few graphical niceties. As far as I'm concerned, it's not worth the risk of something going awry in an upgrade, although there's no reason not to go with the new version for new installs of BOINC.

Just my $0.02.

It also allows you to set up your work load preferences better. I just rearranged how many WU's to load in and also told it to load a few days extra work. Now I've got all the work this system can handle even if there is a problem on the server. Somewhere along the line I lost the setup for the % bars, but other than that 5.10.7 runs just fine. Of course I am a windows person not a Mac. But still I don't see any issues as to why 5.10 should be a "threat" vs 5.8. On the other hand I am running XP plain, not Vista. So I guess for me I am running an older system and am not "threatened" by new releases. Plus 5.8 to 5.10? Thats a big jump in versions. But hey, your choice, 5.8 or 5.10, they do look about the same overall.

There are many changes that cannot be seen with the naked eye. I think that the Benchmark system has been changed, so using older versions of BOINC would give you wrong amount of credits.

BTW, thanks for posting this thread, I had forgotten to check for a newer version and was just thinking of RAH updates not BOINC updates lately.

Not completely accurate. Things to do with the benchmarks have changed. But the basic system is the same.

Rom changed to VS 2005 to compile. That has increased the benchmarks on Windows about 5%.

David fixed an issue with dual core benchmarks.

Log:
- client: fix inconsistent integer benchmarks on Windows
with multicore machines. I don't know why this happened,
but I fixed it by doing integer benchmarks only on CPU zero.
This is OK since cores have separate integer units
(but not necessarily FP units)

David also shortened the benchmark loop from 20 seconds to 10. So now it should only take 30 seconds (rather than 60) to run them.

oh, i just found the first "bug" with xp sp2 and boinc 5.10
the extra graphics features of this boinc version showed up in the beginning and then after it read my RAH prefs it dumped all those features.

talked to a volunteer helper and he said it looks like a bug and will send my screen shot to the developers. very odd thing to happen.

Yes, obviously. The point I was making is that the official sites official download pages has a link to the official release notes. Those release notes are for 5.8.
But still I don't see any issues as to why 5.10 should be a "threat" vs 5.8.

I have had issues before with my Win NT4 system, things usually work okay on my XP systems.

where did you read about that at? I don't think they can tap into your machine directly. It sounds more like sending out a command to kill bad WU's on peoples machines when they communicate their results back to the server.

Microsoft don't support it. I develop software and unfortunately have customers that run my programs on NT4 systems. They have not the resources nor will to upgrade, since what they have fulfills their needs adequately.

It is therefore necessary for me to have an NT4 box to ensure program modifications work on their platforms, as many, now, routinely used API routines are either not available, or only part functional on NT4. I believe herein lies the source of the problems I've had upgrading BOINC before.

Certain project clients will not run on that machine, Leiden for example.

Yes, it's more like a kill command, sorry for the confusion.
I read about this new feature in these threads:

I wonder if it would have any usefulness for this project. Quorum is not used here.
