I believe that the plus/minus system should be removed and only the red "x" function available. So do I Anders n |

Until David Kim gets organised, this might work. Go to- Your profile-Edit Message Board Preferences-Filtering. Change filter threshold from default to approx -10 or so. One of the Mods mentioned this idea in a thread some time ago. ps; not sure if the above will work if the 'idiot' reads this. [keeping fingers crossed]. |

I am in agreement, as a matter of fact I will personally go on a crusade of +1 every single -1 post I find. Got a plus from me too Matt for the idea. Thanks to you kind Rosetta moderators for your efforts with regards to this issue. Antony |

We disabled this pointless rating feature on the CPDN/boinc forums a while back, it appears to only be used for flame wars and the like, rather than it's intended purpose. If someone is going through and giving dozens of -ve ratings per day to loads of posts and people blindly, they're obviously not interested in the project itself and I don't see what would be wrong in blocking their account in that case. However simply removing the functionality would be more diplomatic. It would be interesting to know who the top -ve rater is ... so, project staff, how about pulling it out of the DB + publishing it? :=) |

sounds like the consensus is to remove the rating option. Any objections? |

There is an alternative here: http://pirates.spy-hill.net/glossary/index.php?title=Forum_rating_points This is the rating code from the pirates project, which introduces things like daily limits and so forth. But I personally prefer the simpler solution of disabling them entirely. For reference the option is set in config.xml. <no_forum_rating/> http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ProjectOptions |

It's a shame that the project has to change its operating procedure because of a couple of morons. |

sounds like the consensus is to remove the rating option. Any objections? I like the rating feature, however once it turns into random abuse there is not much left to do. I would like to see the code from the pirates project tested on a real project though. It works fine there but there was not a problem there either. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

I am throwing this against the wall to see if it sticks: Another possible option could be a modified version of what Pirates is apparently doing. Rather than set a strict daily limit on the number of +/-'s that a member can assign, make it variable, based upon a combination of RAC and date last credit posted. i.e., if a member has a RAC of less than 10 (?) and no recent credits posted within the past 10 days (?), then allow them a daily limit of 1 (?) +/-. And so on. Ok, let's see if this will stick..... |

i.e., if a member has a RAC of less than 10 (?) and no recent credits posted within the past 10 days (?), then allow them a daily limit of 1 (?) +/-. That is starting to sound like you are still allowed to be a moron if you have enough machines... or enough user IDs under your thumb. Have the default preferences changed or something? It used to be that posts were not filtered until they had like a -25 rating. Why is everyone talking about things with a -1 disappearing? I am against removing the rating system. I have never used it and have never paid any attention to it to the point of not even knowing it was there until I read this thread. As was pointed out you can set the filtering level in your user preferences. The default is not to filter out any post until it gets a -25 rating. I rather doubt that if you left your preference to the default level that any post has ever been filtered for you. But if you want more assurance that you are seeing every post set it to some higher level, say -100 or -1000. So the rating system works as intended it seems to me. Each user can set the filter level to her/his preference. And each user can rate posts as they see fit. The only possible exception is if someone is rating the same post multiple times. Each person should only get to rate each post once. Just my two cents worth. Gene |

My default filter level was set at 0. I had to intentional make an effort to change it to a different setting. Don't know why mine was 0, and yours apparently 25. I guess one of the questions being raised by this discussion is whether the project itself should change something, or if (potentially) 100,000 members should have to individually change something. |
