I have been running both Einstein@home as well as Rosetta@home for a couple of years but my main emphasis was on E@H. They have began releasing their new R2 work units that run considerably faster on machines than can run something called SSE instruction on the chip. I just discovered other than my 2 Athlon 64 XP chips, I am setting on 5 machines than have the Thunderbird core that cannot ues the SSE instructions and I will take a performance hit of as much as 40% over the old R1 jobs. Does the current Rosetta work run faster on the newer AMD chips that have the Thoroughbred or Barton chip? I realize the newer clips will be faster due to higher clock and FSB speeds, but I'm primarily concerned about this SSE instruction set that I was completely unaware of. If the SSE is not an issue with Rosetta work, I will be moving all machines to Rosetta. Thanks, Gary F. Pefect |

As far as I know there's no performance gain due to SSE on Rosetta (also no loss for chips not supporting it), the GHz and cache are the most significant components. |

I believe Tom's right - there's currently no SSE optimisations. Your Thunderbirds will be welcome here ;) |

I believe Tom's right - there's currently no SSE optimisations. Your Thunderbirds will be welcome here ;) Thanks, that's a relief. Now I have gotten into another mess. I ran out of work for Rosetta and can't get any more. I've tried setting the "connect to" from everything from 10 days to .5 days in the general pref. and can't get a thing. Currently I have all machines set to 5 days. I have 6 machines and all at home and not networked. I'm able to get work on the slower machines, it's the Athlon 64 that's causing me problems. I have the target run time set to 10 hours on all machines. I've even tried resetting Rosetta on the 64 machine with no success. I know I'm overlooking something simple as I have run 2 projects at the same time before and am doing so now with the slower machines. Any ideas on what might be going on? Gary F. Prefect |

If your messages indicate no work being requested as you update to the project, you may need to increase the Rosetta resource share, or remove other projects that you do not plan to do work for. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

Thank you, and I apoligize for any additional posts regarding this subject that was driving me crazy. I had forgotten which forum I had posted the question in and just now found your response. Don't know if it will work yet, but it does indeed make a good deal of sense. I shall give it a try. thanks, Gary |

I happened to notice this post first. Then worked my way through the Q&A boards and saw the same issue raised about three more times. No point in trying to respond to you on all of the boards. When in doubt, post to Number Crunching. It would be helpful if you could do an update to the project and then copy the resulting messages for us to understand what you have going on there. As for simple things people might overlook... on the Projects tab of BOINC Manager's advanced view, what is shown for the "status" of Rosetta? Does it say "Won't get new tasks"? If so, left click the line with Rosetta on it, then select the button on the left which reads "Allow new tasks". Then update to the project. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

When in doubt, post to Number Crunching. I thought for sure that changing the resources from 100/100 to 200/100 with the 200 going to Rosetta would give me additional work, but I now have it set at 500/100 and my last job is 70% completed with no more in cache. What am I doing wrong on this one machine? |

which machines are we talking about here? I can see three that are running Win98 which might be a problem. The one running XP Home says: Average turnaround time 0 days. I'm not sure if that's just because it's not completed a job yet. If so, leave it and it should pick one up when it gets to around 90% on the current job. Also, what version of BOINC are you running - it's obviously not one of the newer ones as it doesn't show the CPU's supported extensions. |

Looks like he's running 5.2.7 BOINC. This is very old. Many improvements to the scheduler have been made in the more recent releases. Here is some info. on installing the new BOINC release. Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |
