https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/hosts_user.php?userid=2056 I was looking at the above rosetta user and I don't understand how someone could have that many computers at one college ? Some of the computers have gotten zero credit, yet still have a high rank. Can someone explain this ? curious, Jonathan |

It's the college itself. not an individual. University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wisconsin UW-Madison CAE |

That answers the question about the number of computers, but if you look down the list, they don't seem to be ranked properly within that account. One of them has zero RAC and zero total and yet is listed higher then machines with RACs in the 200s and total credits in the 20,000s. It's possible that the list was so long, it isn't actually sorted I suppose. It's the college itself. not an individual. Thanks for the responses ! (^: How does a college install BOINC on all those computers ? I'm sure one individual installed them. And perhaps has left the college and left them all running ? Looks like some of them never ran at all and are at zero. So it seems like perhaps the email address given at startup could be emailed to see if the person is still on campus and could get those zero computers running again. Or maybe someone in the message boards goes to this school and could look around and investigate ? Just curious why some of the computers were at zero is all. Jonathan |

The way BOINC works, it is not uncommon to have it wake up one day and "decide" your machine should begin using a different host ID, and so it creates a new one. At that point, the old one appears idle, and a new one begins to show work being done. This can occur when BOINC is reinstalled, PC is upgraded, new operating system loaded etc. Add this signature to your EMail: Running Microsoft's "System Idle Process" will never help cure cancer, AIDS nor Alzheimer's. I'm sure if you looked at our department account (housing and food services), and probably this account, there are thousands of 'computers'. In our public labs we use a bit of software called deep freeze. Upon reboot, it deletes all changes a user has made to the system since the last restart. I didn't do a great job building the image deployed to the lab computers, so each time the machines restarted it had to reattach to Boic creating a new host ID. |

They are either deployed via images as Ethan says (and he should know ;-)) OR they are sent out via Active Desktop or similar systems. Why did you assume it was a single person that may have left ? Universities have lots of computers :-) Some do not alays run.... I believe they would use Condor (with the boinc integration) to do wht they do. well since they developed it (did you check out the 'participants' website, It's the Computer Aided Engineering department... You may like to note that is only part of the crunching power.. http://www.boincstats.com/search/all_projects.php?cpid=49307b620338173e78e3c993fc9575b8 Team mauisun.org |

I wish all schools attached their computer labs to Rosie. :) |
