Also since the Intel Mac's are SSE2 as a minimum then there compile can certainly have the switches flicked once teh code can make use of it.

Good point! That would go a long way to make Mac crunching more competitive on Rosetta.

I hope Matt will follow me on this one, let's offer the QA to David and see if he is ok with it.
We can take the logistic on our side to make sure it works well!
I mean, i can find computer and i can develope the QA script.

Matt, what do you think?

I believe Tom's Hardware has pics of the 8 core system from CES. Even shows Rosetta@home on one slide :)

What was the actual cost of the system? I'd guess prices will drop in the future.

That's you in the video, right? I had no idea you were French. C'est la magie de l'Internet, le monde est petit..

Cool video, in any case. Just too bad you didn't mention Rosetta by name, though you said "calculs scientifiques".

Cheers!

well, yes, I try to mention Rosetta when i can, you probably noticed that the slide next to the machine does ;)

if you want more info about the PC, my friend Dave, evangelist for my employer putted together a little web site, he added a section for my PC:
Intel Capabilities forum Rosetta is mentioned there :) so do BOINC and Seti

this web site is actually pretty cool, it is all about stopping using number for your benchmarks, and tell you more about what your PC can actually do ...
if i tell you that your PC is a 5.1, it does not help you, but if i tell you that your PC can record 3 videos while playing 1 video, it explains you more.
feedback are welcome there, Dave try to keep it very open and fair.

and yes .... ou lala , i am french
(Don't shoot! i surrender ;) just kidding ... don't forget Lafayette :)

$ 5000? Isn't that an awfull lot of money for 'just' 8 cores? For that money, you can cluster at least 6 E6600 machines (and while at it, overclock them, they are good overclockers). That are 12 cores for the same money. Now, I don't know what type of processor you used in that 8 core monster, but I guess that they won't be so superior that 8 of them will beat 12 of the others.

you could buy crunchers more efficiently, but then you'll always pay a premium for new tech and that's what this is. It's also a xeon machine so there's a premium there that Rosetta is unlikely to make much use of. Of course, the xeon can run a single eight-threaded app whereas the cluster can't, and i'd expect the xeon to use less electricity as there's less overhead on things like graphics.

For Rosetta C2D/C2Q is the obvious choice, unless your employer is paying ;)

The idea behind a cluster is that it can run a x threaded app (where x is the number of cores, with each thread getting full cpu time of a core). Of course, I don't say that it will run everything as fast as a 'real' x core machine. But for some things, like Rosetta, it only requires a process/core, no need to interract with the other processes. That way, a cluster is just as good as an x core machine. Or a renderfarm, for that it doesn't matter much if it is a cluster or a single machine.

but then you couldn't boast of having the faster single pc at rosetta@home, probably wouldn't be as good at showing off on various shows and if you a performance profiler it would be a bit hard to test out and design with the seperate machines.

It as because I can (also the discount who probably gets may make up for it.
It for fun :-) if you can afford it.

People water cool system, phase change them etc when it would probably be cheaper to just buy another computer.

Why spend more on the silver coloured monitor or case when a beige el cheapo whould do?

:-D

it is all matter of taste :)

I never played with Neon light in a PC case before, so, i thought it was fun.
big fast PCs are like fast red or yellow sport cars ... some people think it is over the top, some other people will die to get one.

one fact is sure, a single PC with 8 core is more power efficent than a cluster of 8. In the case of computing farms, it is the only part that matter.
