I used to be inspired by this project alot. I felt it held out hope for advances in science to perhaps one day get a handle on major diseases, such as cancer. I have since lost faith in the project's administration, though. Most likely my main goal, now, in Rosetta, is to achieve a RAC of zero. It may take a while, but I'll most likely get there. I am actively searching for a new DC project that, to me, I can have more faith in.

I don't think he was trying to flame anyone. I think that comment was made to the authors statement about communication from Dr. Baker when we have found just the opposite to be true. When faced with simple questions that he either doesn't want to answer or isn't willing to take a stand on he evades by saying he will no longer be answering emails.
These are not opinions, these are facts.

My systems are running 24/7 doing nothing most time.

A few years ago I visit a dutch forum, and on that forum there was a couple of guys asking for help in a online battle RC5-64, so I joined them.
I've a lot of fun with it, the battle against other teams, but also wihin the team was exiting.

After RC-64 I stopped crunching, because why cruncing RC-72, I would never live long enough to see the battle ends.
I was not alone in that an many started of joined another project with the old teamname like Seti.

After a while started missing the fun of the battle.
So I looked for a project that gives me the fun back but also serves a proper goal.
First I found that in UD-grid, but disliked the client and the lack off a descent way to make or join a team.
So switched to FaD.
After FaD was closed I switched to rosetta because it has the same goal.

So I crunching just for the fun of stats and the battle against other teams, I prefer a project with a medical purpose, but if there are no medical projects that gives me the fun, then I'll even join a rediculous project like RC-72 to waste my cputime.

I crunched Rosetta because of I like being able to contribute what I can - I am not a doctor and understand next to nothing about it, but being able to contribute what I do understand - computer power.

I'm here for a few reasons. First, because I feel that my contribution is helping to make the world a better place. I have a mild family history of diabetes, and I have friends with it, as well as other similar diseases. The sheer number of people this project can/will help is astounding. If we can help to come up with cures, we can help a lot of people.

Second, if we can make it take less time and money to produce a medicine, we are guaranteed to lower the costs of medication. No, the big companies probably won't pass the savings on to us out of generosity. But, by driving the costs down, we enable many of the smaller companies to compete. We also make it easier to start a new company. This increase in competition will, given time, lower prices.

Third, well, it gives me an excuse to tinker with computers. That's always nice!

I do DC because I'm fascinated by the idea that people can be a part of an effort to learn more about our world even if they don't have the technical expertise or training to be in the laboratory or a part of a project team.

I'm on Rosetta because it seems to have such incredible potential and real world applicability.

I arrived at Rosetta because I can't contribute to the two projects I'd most like to support - CPDN and orbit. CPDN only want people with new fast boxes, and have WU that run for far too long on my legacy farm (total 8GHz but no box faster than 900MHz). Orbit can't get the funds it needs to get started.

I crunched Einstein for a while, and still do when my servers can't reach Bakerlab.

Then I dropped in to Rosetta last autumn (northern autumn) and discovered the most donor friendly project of them all. This project tells you hat is going on with the science, apologises when they screw up the software (and they have done at times), and most of all listens to suggestions from users. Two suggestions of mine have made it into this project, and I've seen many suggestions from others make it into the way things are done here.

Even though I am a physicist by inclination, and an environmentalist by politics, that is outweighed by being made welcome on arrival and by never ever feeling here that I have outstayed my welcome. The human reasons outweigh the technical and political ones, at least for me.

Others are using the science of physics, which as a Christian, I find certain aspects of physics to be flawed, so I think Dr. Bakers method has more promise and is worth my time.
I don't believe that disease, and especially certain diseases, can ever be wiped out, but that doesn't mean that we should ever stop developing new ways to treat these diseases to ease peoples pain and suffering and make their lives more livable, even if living with a terminal illness.

Yes, very much so. It's using essentially a 3D model of the atoms, and calculating how they behave after "changing something".

I am participating in this project because I saw my father die of cancer and my grandfather die of Alzheimer's. At the beginning of distributed computing I crunched the SETI application, now I also crunch Rosetta and a few others.

I like the fact that this project gives hope and is run by people who care what happens. There have been few problems with the project, and usually solved within a day.

Current cancer patient with high expectations of this branch of science(note: this applies to all protein based projects); is the real reason.
