Message 99144 - Posted: 26 Sep 2020, 17:42:21 UTC - in response to Message 99143.

shows up in edge as new tab. I had about 30 of those tab page coronavirus reports as the computer runs 24/7 and edge was left up overnight.
I set the check time for new notices to 0 in boincstats, maybe that will fix the problem.

The 30 doesn't make sense. Why would it be "launching" the notice that many times, unless you have 30 computers? Not that it should be launching anything at all. If it's embedded, it should be shown inside the Boinc Manager or Boincstats, not popping up more windows. Somebody ought to tell the Boinc programmers to sort it. They don't listen to me though.

WTF is going on here. I've never had a SPAM popup from BOINC before. Intentional or not, it is the definition of SPAM. Seems like the only likely solution is to detach Rosetta.

No, because it's a one off by accident, you're overreacting. Once you delete the message, you won't see it again.

You can't delete it in there. You need to remove the message in Boinc. That's what's spawning more pages.

I use Boinctasks, not Boinc Manager, so I'm not sure how you delete them in there (there doesn't seem to be an option!), but there is an option to "not remind you of messages". That might work.

To Stop BoincTasks from opening this web page:

BoincTasks -> Extra -> Boinc Settings -> Notices : Set "Check for new notices" = 0 which disables the function that opens the web page.

Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but if BoincTasks can open a web page, any program can open a web page, download an undesirable program and execute the just downloaded program. This would be such a massive security breach that I must be missing something.

I am F89479uierfij pissed. This video has shown up as a new page in my browser since yesterday every 30 minutes or so. I am not clicking on anything to get it. Yes that means a lot of new tabs, I am sick of it. I don't know how you are doing it, but it keeps showing up as a new tab. I want it to stop. NOW. Or I am going to be really f489-43y8794try pissed off. If I have to deal with this crap any longer this will escalate to whom ever will listen, and I will demand retribution. This is not what I asked for. Once is enough. STOP IT. And If you think I am mad now, just keep sending them. PS - YouTube is who is streaming it. And as I write this, I got another one. This is shit. STOP IT.

It's called the stupidity of Microsoft Windows. They make everything "user friendly", which actually makes it so no user has any idea of what is doing what anymore. Everything nowadays is so vague. Even searching for a file is hit and miss. It's like they've managed to give the OS a mind, and it makes mistakes and its own decisions.

As for your last sentence, well it's down to your browser and antivirus to block it at the last minute. A very silly way of doing things. Whoever is responsible for designing html is an idiot. Nothing EVER should open a page without the user asking for it. No popup adverts in another window, no links on a page opening a new tab or window, I don't expect that, I expect a link to open where I am right now, unless I right click and choose to open a new page. There was a virus once that would open a billion browser windows and overload the system. That should never have been possible.

Send an email directly to David Anderson at Boinc, he's the one responsible for the terrible programming allowing Boinc to do this. He'll sort it if you threaten him with a lawsuit. He certainly needs a good kick up the behind.

If you don't use Boinctasks, well Boinc doesn't even have a delete button [shakes head in disbelief]

To solve the problem, detach rosetta from boinc.

Then delete the notice (mesage) which contains https://www.youtube.com/embed/ODEIN5V3yLg

No idea if BoincTasks, all by itself, can open a web page, but BOINCTasks isn't at fault here. This capability is built directly into the BOINC client. The multiple tabs issue is just a result of BOINCTasks querying the BOINC client for new notices.
In BOINC Manager new Notices are queried every time that a user clicks the Notices tab. Notices can be completely disabled by adding a flag in the cc_config.xml configuration file.

<no_info_fetch>1</no_info_fetch>
*Note this will also disable the project list for adding new projects

Ultimately, running code on your computer is how BOINC fundamentally works. Unless you are re-compiling the applications from every project (if they are open source), auditing the application code, and running your own custom binary, you are already running binaries that could be doing just about anything on your computer. The ability of a project to auto-open a compromised web page is pretty meaningless, when you realize that you are already running a black box binary (for projects with closed source applications). Project reputation and trust is really the foundation of any distributed computing project, especially the projects that don't open source the code that they are running on your hardware.

The ability to embed an iframe into BOINC notices is silly, and a pretty big inconvenience to anyone that doesn't realize what's going on.

The project Notices are just HTML/ CSS, so any project can populate them with anything. This could probably be fixed by either adjusting the flags in the iframe embedded in the Notice, or just removing it altogether. If the video is hosted locally, along with the other Rosetta content/data, than I imagine it might be able to be embedded in the Notice using the HTML5 video tag, without opening a link in the user's browser with a redirect to youtube.

I have been utterly unable to reproduce this issue on my laptop and on my desktop, both running Windows 10, one with BOINC 7.16.11 and the other with 7.16.7.
I did just install Linux Mint on an HDD on the desktop, attached Rosetta, opened the notices tab and a Firefox tab with the video did open automatically.
Just the 1 tab, nothing more.

That's brilliant, blame someone else for the way you have configured your system and the software on it.
Yes, the Manager needs to handle messages better, but being an a rude & abusive @^$$hole about it won't help.

I'm running WIn10 & Edge. I've got the notice in my BOINC Manager messages tab, and i don't have videos playing or browsers popping up & playing videos.

You have to "collapse" the message with the minus button at the left of the header first.

Notices in BOINC with links are nice to have, if it doesn't have huge amount of blank spaces and pop ups.

On Linux Debian Buster, BOINC manager 7.14.2, Every time I connect to a computer that have this notice, a new Firefox tab show up with this video.

On windows 10 BOINC manager, it does not pop up, this might be pop-up blocker. When I right click notices page and choose refresh, then the video pops up on windows 10 edge.

Actually, aren't the Boinc apps quite restricted to only writing data within their project folder? And if they're not run with admin rights (are they?) they certainly can't mess around with the system files.

Mind you, this opening of a webpage is hardly a security risk anyway. It's only going to be what the project admin has linked to, and no browser (well possibly Edge but who uses that?) would allow code to run willy nilly.

That was what I would suggest.
I'm working on a BoincTasks fix, so this won't happen a second time.

I'm working on a BoincTasks fix.
As suggested here, a simple fix is to press - this collapses the message and press the red x to remove it after watching the video.
