I really hope so, but as long as he has the power, my question concerns me.

Most people here would leave if they thought Donald had anything to do with it.
But do what you want. There are plenty of others.

Indeed as an European, partecipating to a project in the epoch of "america first" is indeed concerning.

This is at a university. Any commercial application of the information developed here is down the road.
You can get concerned at some point I suppose, but this is much too basic a level for that.

EDIT: European companies can use the information developed here too of course. Getting them interested enough to spend the money on development will probably be the biggest hangup.

Dear all,

I‘ve got a question popping up in the back of my head, and I hope, you won‘t get me wrong.
...

I can't imagine on what authority the president could commandeer the results of research done by a public university that's affiliated with the state of Washington. The governor of Washington is Jay Inslee, and he is a great guy.

He must be, Trump hates him.

Hello @Admin
@Mod.Sense

Can you please have the appropriate team/developers look at the Android thread in the Q&A? There are Android TV boxes and phones with pretty powerful GPU's but keep getting RAM errors. It would be great to get these idle devices crunching too!

Rosetta@home does not presently have a GPU application.

The reason the work is tagged as requiring high memory is... well that it often requires high memory, and if the task tries to run on systems that do not have high memory available, it does not run well.

Dear all,

I‘ve got a question popping up in the back of my head, and I hope, you won‘t get me wrong.
As we‘re all enthusiastic to offer capacity, I think, we‘re all doing this with the intention to help worldwide in this case.
I‘m from Germany, and please excuse if I‘ll hurt someones feelings, but all of what I‘ve learned in my life so far prevents me from trusting Donald Trump in the slightest.
The servers for which we‘re currently working are located in the US, is that correct?
Is there something like a proof, that our contribution will be used to help ALL COUNTRIES, regardless of Trump‘s „America first“ promises?

Dr. Baker posted an answer to the question back in the early days of the project, that all results are public domain. Indeed, the servers are at the University of Washington, but the community of developers is global. And the published research speaks for itself. The Project Team also participates in the biannual CASP where the participating teams that do well at their blind predictions give presentations to the other participants describing the methods they utilized to produce their predictions.

Understood... which is why if the developers have the device work on smaller slices at a time (thus less memory), we can get many more devices working for R@H. No different than what R&H actually is... many devices working on a slice of the project as a whole.
Thanks a bunch

Well, in the case of R@h, the smallest "slice" is one model. Models are the unit of the distributed crunching. To make models smaller, you would have to study less complex proteins. But, often, nature dictates the size of your target. Such as COVID-19. If you want to study that, you must study it at the size that it has.

Since most systems have multiple processors, I often suggest people run R@h alongside other projects with smaller memory footprints.

My Asus Max Pro m2 4/64 is weak for this project, it could not start computing, as far as I understand mobile processors are weak for this kind of computing, I changed the G1840 to I5-4690 and the performance improved as 6.5 G1840 cores. Fine. RNA vaccine should defeat the RNA virus.

My Android pixel 2xl is an arm64 device but it's not getting any Wu's. Something else I need to do?

The server is currently out of tasks for mobile devices, so you will at least have to wait for more to be created.

I looked at its details. It looks like it should be able to run one task at a time, and possibly two, due to the size or its memory.

You may need to get familiar with the settings that control the limit of how many tasks it will try to run at the same time.

Hi, I am very new here and have a pile of Raspberry Pi boards in the cupboard which are about to be allocated to fight Covid19. Just installed BOINC on one and the Rosetta@home project but can't see any tasks to run, its crunching data on the Windows PC. Any suggestions where I am going wrong before I switch on all the other boards? I am using a fresh copy of Raspbian if that helps.

This needs to be in the FAQ thread.

To use a Raspberry Pi, you would first need a Pi 4 with at least 2 GB of RAM. Also, Raspbian won't do, since it's a 32-bit distro and the ARM version of Rosetta is 64-bit only. You need to use an aarch64 distro such as Fedora or Arch.

On a 2 GB Pi 4, you'll only have enough RAM to run a single Rosetta task at a time, since it can use up about 1.5 GB per task.

None of my Pi systems are Pi 4, so I can't put those to work on Rosetta.

Hmmm, I set my phone to 4 tasks. I don't really check how it's doing in detail, but according to my PC lists, it's doing about 370 RAC, running only at night. My wife's phone is slowly catching up as well.

I'm mostly worried about the writing to storage these WUs might be doing... does anybody know anything about this?

Amazing, these little phones are crunching as fast as my old computer did back when BOINC got first released.
