As mentioned a few days ago in Can you help Rosetta? thread, today I've rolled up my sleeves and put some time to rewrite the R@h page at Wikipedia the free Internet encyclopedia, which is widely referenced.

Please look at the R@h page on Wikipedia before (28-Mar-06) and after (1-Apr-06) my changes.

I've re-used material from R's website and forums and content I had collected for my How-To: Join Distributed Computing projects that benefit humanity page.

It still needs some formatting (adding a few images as "placeholders" here and there) and better structure, so if anyone has time, feel free to join.

PS: I assume BakerLab doesn't mind myself copying a few images from its Websites for its page on Wikipedia, right? :-)

Hello,

That was my first read of the old and new rossetta wikki.

This statement:

"HPF Phase-1 applied Rosetta v4.2x software on the human genome, started in Nov-04 and finished Nov-05." is incorrect. HPF-1 is still going and will continue to process until HPF-2 begins.

I have just recently finished a 20 hour HPF-1 work unit on another computer.

If further clarification is needed you can go to the HPF-1 forum on WCG and ask your questions thier.

Just updated the page at Wikipedia

Basically added some pics (logo, photo of Rosetta's own 500 Linux nodes cluster from Ethan's homepage, latest 4.98 screenshots in ab-initio and full-atom-relax modes, cancer ribbon etc)

Plus the "How to Join" section: I included a link to P.Buck's Unofficial BOINC Wiki, and to APT pkg for Debian/Ubuntu Linux users.

Also, I think it'd be nice to include info about

1/ the need for volunteer resources (vs using public resources) mentioning the 5Million CPU hours on BlueGene awarded for 2006
2/ Rosetta accuracy (split the CASP results graph along with some graphs from TopPredictions page)
3/ Some info on the science team (?)
4/ Clean up the "Features and Issues" section at the end

PS: It could also help to make an easier "sale" of R@H to friends, as info from an encyclopedia is authoritative afterall ;-)

Today I've added some minor stuff

1/ info about the Baker Lab scientific team (taken the names from http://depts.washington.edu/bakerpg/members.html (it's nice to see so many nationalities, I even noticed a greek name there too).

2/ some info provided here by eberndl about experimental determination of protein structure ("Protein structures are currently solved, very slowly (it can take weeks or even months to figure out how to crystallize a protein for the first time) and at high cost (about $100,000 USD per protein), in the lab by X-ray crystallography or through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments.")

Let me know if there are any glaring errors or ommissions (or just go ahead and correct them yourself).

I still need to do the restructuring I mentioned in previous post.

Also, would someone let me know which of the papers in http://depts.washington.edu/~bakerpg/publications.html to include under a "Bibliography" section.

PS: I've no idea how many people read the Wikipedia page (I couldn't find a stats page for individual pages), but I can tell you that my own DC-HOWTO page has been read about 38,000 times (!!!) since I created it in Jan06 and is linked to from over 100 different pages (as I can tell from referrer-log).

You might want to port some of your changes to the Unofficial BOINC wiki. I would be surprised if that is current. That links from the project front page and should be checked for errors.

I just visited the R@H page in Wikipedia after some time, only to find out that someone had cropped out the "How to Join" section (in addition to someone's stupid bot removed an image from casp6 earlier).

Reading the Wikipedia "talk page":

Do people think that the current how-to-join instructions on main page (and sub-pages) are clear enough for a NEWCOMER (who hasn't installed BOINC yet), i.e. if they came over, having read e.g. Donna's article broadcasted by AP (more), would they have found their way on how to setup BOINC+Rosetta and get it running etc?

No, at least it could be better. While I can live with the brief description on the frontpage I would improve the rah_intro.php page. I think one might just replace the "Getting started" section with your wikipedia version.

P.S.: The credit section is wrong for Rosetta and should be changed as well. Heck the whole page could be better. ;-)

I agree. It needs revision to include the BOINC signup approach without an account key if nothing else. They've apparently made some revisions, and they've added the project URL to the homepage... but they seem to have removed any mention of account key or EMail address or anything else and gone straight to "that's it!".

I just noticed a fellow update the info in Rosetta@home page at Wikipedia (which is great as I don't always have the time to update things) and just wanted to note a couple of things:

In the "The project already has ~XX,000 active PCs (Jun-2006) for ~YY TeraFLOPS " paragraph, I use the number of active PCs (hosts) from http://www.boincstats.com/stats/project_graph.php?pr=rosetta which currently shows ~65K hosts (not to be confused with the ~70K users / people).

Also, I noticed the latest official project requirements now suggest 256MB RAM minimum. The avg WU I get is still 75-140MB (with the big ones ~300MB), so if we allow for 40-80MB for O/S (not including e.g. antivirus etc) doesn't it leave a very little RAM left for apps before system starts paging to disk (and affects performance)?

A lot of the machines that I work on are already above the 256 Megs usage mark; after all the printer monitoring software, the Nav 2006, etc. Even killing off the clearly useless apps, and the system goes into disk swapping as soon as you try and use the system by opening up something like MS Word. *grin* Upgrading to 512 Megs is suddenly becoming easy to justify to clients.
