DPC stampedes often have a good effect since they are a large community and have a tendencey to leave some people behind (read a lot) when they move to another stampede.

It's kind of an advertisment in their own group :-)

Pardon my ignorance about your game but I've heard alot about it and was wondering if it requires one to buy a CD to play online or if it is credit card based or what? If it's only net based what's the official site(s)?
Thanks.

I don't know about EQ2 but you can download EverQuest and just pay the subscription. The main site for both is EQ Players.

Well yes you can reach it through EQplayers.com Tho it does have a site of its own called Everquest2.com you can download the whole game from the net but depending on your connection speed this can take many hours. The most commenly used way is to buy the DVD/cd from your local retailer. Also yes it requires a credit card or a prepaid game card. Once you have loaded the game it updates itself off the net and is played Online in real time.

I will look and see if SOE has a contact site for maybe contacting them for such links as yours. As i mentioned before just for the Everquest 2 there is about 100k useres world wide with the beefed up gameing machines that this type stuff would be easily crunched on.

My present thought is still in draft/pending/"to be organized/reviewed" status, but I'm thinking I'd prefer to save the user that initial 5+MB download of the R@H application, and have it on the CD. So, initially the only thing they'd have to download would be a WU (i.e., you're only 5 minutes away from crunching your first WU!). Your point that this obsoletes your CDs rather quickly is well-taken. We'd have to devise a plan to distribute each batch of CDs produced quickly so they don't age on a shelf, if my "CD includes Rosetta" idea is the final implementation.

If an updated app is required over the one on the CD then I think it'd be worth someone zipping the necessary files and making then available online, for automated download. Pkzip or something similar could be included on the CD to extract the files from the zip once downloaded.

It might need a small number of people to put the files on the web to ease the burden on their/their ISP's bandwidth, while keeping it manageable.

It'd make for a much smaller download if it's possible, and the only files that would be needed from rosetta would be the work units. I've got space on my ftp server for download, but I don't have much upload bandwidth available.

Has anyone thought of approaching the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to get their machines crunching? I know that getting a contact that is agreeable within governments is difficult if not impossible but if this idea were to be successful it would be a great boon to the effort. It would probably take Dr. Baker or someone of his stature and credibility to actuaclly make this happen. Think of the PR value of having the CDC actually helping the project...

I agree with your point, but if I were the person installing, I would not be comfortable watching my PC run off to a non-Rosetta domain and downloading and executing files. I think it's bad enough that BOINC is on a different website. But we're avoiding that one by placing it on the CD.

Once the CD is completed, the idea would be to also have it available for download on a Rosetta website. This would give people an option to take a larger download, but have an easier install and more detailed project description.

Perhaps we could orchestrate it in a way that the CD checks that R@H web image before installing, and downloads only the portions that have been updated since the CD was cut. That way you could avoid pulling down a second copy of the animations or user manuals, but still get updates to BOINC and R@H, if needed.

Back to "CAN YOU HELP ROSETTA??"

Msg to Moderators: Three or four months ago, R@H was about 64MC behind P@H and gaining very slowly. Today R@H is about 35MC behind and gaining by over 1MC per day.

My observations of the reasons for this are (order is not important):

1. R@H provides feedback to and interaction with the crunchers. Questions are answered, information is provided, etc. Details about bad WU are provided. Don't underestimate the importance of any this.

2. The quorum system used by P@H penalizes crunchers because the BOINC benchmarking alg. doesn't do well with LINUX, especially multi-core LINUX. One group of people says, "Credit isn't important.", and in and of itself that statement is true. However, people are competitive and to discount that trait will cause them to seek another project where that competitiveness will be rewarded.

I think, it would helpfull to increase the throughput, if binaries for other Unixes, like HPUX, Solaris, AIX, IRIX, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and MacOS X (on Intel) will be available. - On seti these other Unixes do a lot of work in the meantime.
If the project needs volunteers to do or help in the porting to the different Unixes, I am interested and willing to help.

What do we have in regards to the CD? I would be willing to do a snag-it movie of the install, so the user knows what is coming before they install the software.

I also have a webpage layout install cd that I used for some time with my business. I think it could be pretty easily converted to fit the bill here. It was autorun, with a simple menu to click on, that started the different installs. As I produced it the first time around, I am sure I could convert it to work with this. Maybe have a welcoming movie from Mr. Baker himself explaining Rosetta and its goals, and thanking them for their genorous use of their spare cycles.

Could lay in the welcoming screen/movie,that would go into the installation movie. Would make the movies in .WMV format for the windows machines.

Then either fire the installation at the end of the movie, or instruct them to click on the install button.

I have a high capacity web server that can house a ISO of the cd for download by the teams. Also I could do a Team link on the main page so that once they are set-up and running they could join the team that gave them the cd.

Just some thoughts

What do we have in regards to the CD?

At this point, it's an idea. But there are several things in progress that will help with it. If you review this thread, it describes some of the technical details that may be used to make the CD. As well as some of my thoughts on how to make a single prompt screen do everything for you, and yet load the bulk of the code from the CD.

Laurelin is working on videos which I hope can be incorporated.

I've been working on a "Landing page". I think the one we produced for the tell-a-friend function is probably a good landing page. What I'm now working on is more of a Rosetta tutorial. Sorry, haven't had the time to post the draft to the web yet.

The Rosetta volunteers have the "easy to install CD" on the "to do" list, but it is a big item. And we're a small group, so we're taking incremental steps, which will later culminate in a CD. There is a description of how to join the volunteers group here. Please join us and contribute your ideas, and perhaps the use of that software you've got.

Can anyone out there offer to write a small Windows sockets program that will handle the user registration portion of the CD? I've outlined what I have in mind here.

One area is if you or someone close to you are affected by one of the illnesses mentioned as part of the focus Rosetta (Cancer, HIV, Alzheimer's, Malaria, Anthrax, and "other" viruses), there are support groups, foundations, hospital areas, etc. for many of these - they usually have newsletters, websites, or even a board to put up flyers, etc. They might be interested in providing space for a blurb about this project. And if those running such an organization become involved in this project...

I've had the same thought. But I am uncertain what the most effective way to reach these groups would be. Can you help?

Also I'm concerned that since there presently is no direct work on a specific cure per se, I feel such a target audience is going to have a rather different perspective on the acceptable time to see results. I my mind, if we see results in 10 or 20 years I'll be very pleased. But unfortunately the folks in those support groups aren't generally using that size of time window. And so I didn't want to confuse the long term goal with their short term hopes for a cure. Approaching such groups would have to be done very carefully worded contact.

Agreed - the long term nature of the work would have to be stressed.
At this time, this is only a suggestion for those already affected (directly or in the family) that would often already be in contact with organizations. My help for recruitment for this project will be in another direction.

Just a quick heads up. Einstein@home will be finishing up their current S4 project in the the next 20 days or so. They probably won't have any WU to crunch until mid-july or so. I let them know Here that Rosetta is looking for all the help they can get. Hope this helps.

I just did the same thing :) And was pointed by their moderator to [url=http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_thread.php?id=4229#35409
]this post[/url] saying the S5 work will be coming online in "a few weeks". So there isn't likely to be much if any gap in WU from Einstein :(

How about just plain-old monetary donations?

The folk over at SETI@home recently ended a fund-drive that raised something like a quarter million dollars.

That much lettuce goes a long way.

Rosetta may never be as "sexy" as SETI, but surely there are those among us who would be willing to donate a bit of money along with our spare CPU cycles.

It's pretty easy to set up a PayPal account...

That's a thought, but the project is asking for computer time, not funding at this point. And so it would make the most sense if the money were to be used for some specific means of attracting more users. And given that there are still quite a number of things we could do that cost virtually nothing (such as sending that letter to Rosetta users, I'm still working on that side. Do you have some ideas on how to turn money into users?
