When the rosetta screensaver comes on, I am unable to get back to my normal screen. The display stays in 640x480 mode, and it looks like a wierd test pattern when I try to do anything. This only happens when I resume from the rosetta screen saver, though, and I have no issues viewing the graphic from the BOINC window.

Could you tell us what video hardware you have?
Does this problem only happen if the screen saver is activated (and not when you click on show graphics) type stuff?

It seems (guess) that it just dosn't like you video card, maybe updating you video drivers would help.

I have a similar problem. Since I installed BOINC (and run it as screensaver), I've often come home to a machine that either

a. has a black screen, but has not powered off the monitor, not recoverable
b. Blue Screen'd itself to death, hard restart required
c. has a message from the ATI drivers, informing me that the VPU recovery kicked in because my graphics card had locked up. often a restart was required shortly after.

This was experienced on an AMD X2 4200+, ATI x800, using ATI's reference drivers, versions 6.1 and later 6.2. I have no problems running intensive 3D apps (F.E.A.R., World of Warcraft) for hours at a time, so I don't think there's an instability in my system.
