Is it time to throttle back your systems so you house no longer resonates with the scream of cooling fans imitating a swarm of angry mosquitoes? Have we managed to crunch Dr. Baker and his underpaid minions into submission? Or are there other factors at work here? If you note the number of jobs waiting in the queue has been steadily dropping for the past week and is now somewhat below 4.5 million. Is this just CASP9 winding down or have we picked up a significant number of cycles as "that other" project struggles to keep it's download servers up on a reduced schedule? Good work guys! |

the work tends to come in lumps - it falls quite low sometimes but they always have plenty more jobs to feed in before it gets there! |

Is it time to throttle back your systems so you house no longer resonates with the scream of cooling fans imitating a swarm of angry mosquitoes? I noticed your PCs are in very compact cases. Why not try to improvise and try to get them more "out in the open", such as a bigger case with bigger fans (quieter). |

Hey Chile Man! Great to hear from you and you are so right - bigger case + bigger fan = more peace and quiet. However, there are a number of factors to consider. First, and maybe most importantly, room. The fact that I live in a two bedroom waterfront condo means that space is limited. Since I don't have a wife to structure my life my "home server & desktop" system is in my bedroom and if I could teach it how to fold a load of laundry now and then I would not the trade off wold be completely satisfactory. That system lives in a huge case with monster fans and is whisper quiet (which is more than I can say about most wives) The other bedroom is used as my office (because of health problems I work at home a lot) and that is where my Rosetta crunchers reside. Those Silverstone cases are great and fan noise is not really an issue EXCEPT for the CPU fans. Because of the configuration of the cases the CPU chip resides right below the power supply - there is only about an inch and a half of clearance between the fan and the power supply so my options are limited. There are not that many low profile after-market fans which will fit in the available space. The stock CPU fans are loud! I have considered putting water cooling in these boxes but that would entail pulling the whole system apart to be able to get under the motherboard to attach the clip for the water block. Maybe someday but at this point I am too lazy. A part of getting old I guess. If I had gone with "traditional" cases I would have only been able to place four or five systems in the same space where I currently have nine so I guess the trade off was worth it. I just signed a new contract for electricity which should drop my price about 35% (really got screwed on the last contract) and with October and possibility of an arctic cold front dropping the temps down into the 80's right around the corner I may able to place an additional host or two. |

I am smiling a VERY big smile at you thinking a 'cold front' is coming to Texas! |

Is it time to throttle back your systems so your house no longer resonates with the scream of cooling fans imitating a swarm of angry mosquitoes? The idea that it's a concern to have dropped below a queue of 4.5m is amusing in itself to those who've been around for a few years, but it's also a good reminder too. Back in January, and regularly (if not often) before, the project used to run out of work. The normal queue was just a few 100k and if there was a server issue over a weekend - particularly a holiday weekend - we'd run out of work. The Server Status page was home to many of us and we became familiar with the make_work, validator and transitioner. Take a look at these pages where the complaints rolled in: 1, 2, 3, 4. Since February this parsimonious queue was increased from a few 100k to a few mil, the server has spent almost all its time up and we're running CASP jobs with no risk of running out of work (especially with the short lead times for return). I think what this thread means is that we should thank the back-room guys for solving their server issues, increasing the workload, cutting down on the moaning by contributors and just enabling us to get on with the important work we're all here for. For good measure, Mini-Rosetta seems to be working well, with occasional but very minimal problems and the last couple of versions of Boinc manager seem to have solved the scheduling problems I saw earlier this year too. It's good times with Boinc and Rosetta in particular, so if anyone knows people who moved to other projects during problematic times, now's the time to call them back. Now watch it all fall over by the weekend... |

That were the times when I ran a 6 days cache and still sometimes ran out of work. I'm really happy the way it's now. I'm down to a 0.25 day cache without facing any problems. Keep up the good work! cu Joe |

Hey Chile Man! Yes, the stock CPU fans (that come with the CPU) are pretty loud. I bought a zalman cooler for my Desktop, works quietly and cool (One side of the case is open since there are no extra fans other than the CPU cooler). Try looking at newegg.com for after market cpu coolers. They can't be all that big to not fit in your cases. Right? |

Many different posters on various forums have nothing but good things to say about the Corsair H50. Really good for those builds with tight fits. I recently purchased one, but have not yet installed it. FWIW: Normal msrp is about $99. Currently a very decent price at BestBuy Linky to the YouTube installation video Defeat Censorship! Many different posters on various forums have nothing but good things to say about the Corsair H50. I guess it's ok, as a replacement for a stock cooler. But don't expect miracles... I was about to buy one as well, but had to find out, that my Noctua NH-U12-P SE is the better choice for overclocking (but it one only fits in supersized cases...). As well, as far as I read, it can get pretty noisy as well, when the CPU is under load. And you need a place for the fan, which must be installed with the fan blowing into the case, which eventually could heat up a small case. But I must admit, I never tested one, I only read a couple of reviews. cu Joe |

Many different posters on various forums have nothing but good things to say about the Corsair H50. ...and then place the radiator outside (during winter at least) :D |

Many different posters on various forums have nothing but good things to say about the Corsair H50. See I thought about using 2 radiators, one for summer sitting near the a/c vent, or even in it, and one for winter hanging outside the window. Then come Spring or Fall just switch the hoses so you use the right one. Now everytime you switch hoses you introduce air which can cause its own set of problems, so you must be careful. And of course running a fan into the a/c vent or outside has its own set of problems too. But hey if you lived in Alaska when it was cold outside you could stick the radiator in the snow bank, or even dig a hole a few feet down and hit the 'permafrost' layer and leave it all year long. |
