The following was stated in another thread - in order to avoid straying way off topic I took the liberty of branching to a new thread.

Also, following CASP9, the public research server is going to be tied into the BOINC interface, meaning that Rosetta@home crunchers will be working on tasks for different research projects by institutions all over the world.

Can anyone shed a little more light on this? When might there be a list of institutions which are going to be the benefactors of this arrangement be made available for review?

Can you share the reasons that this change is being made? Has the network of users grown so large that after CASP9 it is expected that Rosetta will have a surplus of computing power?

Will it be obvious to those in the network who we are computing for? Are provisions being made to allow us to select which (if any) non-Rosetta projects we are computing for? Or opt out of those projects we may not be comfortable working for?

Are all of the projects which might be using the computing resources of the Rosetta network non-profit or will there also be commercial concerns utilizing resources?

Thanks in advance for the info

Hi Chris

I can't answer all of your questions, but my understanding is that the move was to reduce the delay that robetta (http://robetta.bakerlab.org/) service users have previously faced, and possibly (although this is a guess) allowing those robetta in-house servers to be re-deployed for further in-house rosetta testing(?)

Also, the bottom of the robetta page states that the service is only available for non-commercial use.

I don't think it's so much about there being spare capacity though (far from it!); I believe it's simply to improve the service available to other labs. I guess the gross resources available are the same (although other labs might start adding to R@H because of this!), but the bakerlab will free up some in-house servers and Robetta gets much more capacity.

I would think it had to do with money too, share some resources and still get paid for it. Rosetta has some dedicated and fairly consistent resources, the users, they can farm out to other research projects, rather than do them all in house. It would maintain the other projects security and still keep Rosetta in charge of the research as a whole. That way your research though similar to mine is separate and unique to you and mine is separate and unique to me. There is no possibility of cross contamination or cross transference of ideas and info. Just my opinion.

Danny -

Thanks for the heads up on "Robetta" - I was not even aware of it - in fact I zoomed right past the "misspelling" of Rosetta several times and was rewarded with the old 404 page for my efforts.

That'll teach me to attempt do anything before my morning caffeine!

I am heartened a little by the "non-commercial" statement and the fact that the results are visible to the public.

Once again, thanks for the info - I will try to digest it in small chunks as the day progresses.

If I am comprehending what you are saying correctly, it would appear that you are suggesting that BakerLab might be selling some of our resources to other projects.

I hope that is not the case - I have no desire to be some artifact in a university level yard sale.

The two things which convinced me to drop anchor here and support the Rosetta project were that I believe in the work that they are doing, and they seem to have a top-notch IT staff - nary a glitch of any significance in the two months I have been around.

Add to that the fact that every time I have had a question about how things worked, it was promptly and clearly answered. No tap dancing around the issue, and none of the blunt "take it or leave it" attitude displayed on another unnamed project.

Because of that I really cherish my opportunity to participate in the Rosetta project and really don't want to be bartered out.

Chris, I am glad you are enjoying your Rosetta experience, those are the same basic set of reasons I started as well. Wow! Just two months and already nearing a million R@h credits, that's fantastic!

I can say with great confidence that the plan does not involve BakerLab selling the use of the volunteer computing resources to others. In fact the Robetta servers are offered without charge, so the only source of any funding left in the conversation would perhaps be the research grants behind the research organizations wanting to use the system. I say that because I understand the ethics with which BakerLab operates. However, I do not know any more about the plan for this integration. I will EMail Mike and see if he can offer more details about this system integration.

Thanks "Mod" - I appreciate the time you took to respond to my note and for the information you provided. And I am glad to hear that excess computing resources are made available free of charge to non-commercial entities.

I would still be interested in getting a glimpse of the pallet of work being imported from external entities - not from the perspective of approving or disapproving what is being crunched, but just out of curiosity.

By the way - do you have an older sister named "Non" - sorry couldn't resist.

I stand informed! I am glad this is the case but hope the funding is sufficient to keep Rosetta going.
