Since coming back to R@H after participating in the SETI gauntlet, I've noticed the RAM usage on one of my machines is extremely high compared with before SETI.

I can only have 2 work units running as each one takes up around 600MB. What can I do to help this other than increase the RAM?

Set the memory usage parameters in your global computing preferences. I have mine set for: "50% of memory when computer is not in use"

Unfortunately, Rosetta uses more memory than it thinks it does, so be conservative in this value.

As with many things, memory usage depends on the protein and type of study being done. 600MB is higher then I've seen in a long time. On the other hand, the project did recently (was it about 6 months ago?) increase the recommended minimum system to 512MB, because the newer versions are indeed taking more memory then those that preceded them.

So two things. One, yes the project is taking more memory and there is no relation to crunching SETI or any other project. And two, you happen to be crunching a task that is requiring more memory that you will typically see.

As a rule of thumb... 1GB RAM single core if you want Rosetta to have 0 impact on performance. 1.5GB dual. 2GB 4 cores.
