Cannot stop Rosetta sending me downloads, even though I have selected no new tasks on the projects tab. I have found the size of the dowloads has steadily incresed over recent months and would like to limit size of each download, but can find no options for that. Keep aborting items but the blasted thing just sends me even more downloads. Have been doing this work for several years now, but will move to something else if I cannot stop this swamping !

Hi Thoy

You could try increasing the 'Target CPU Run-Time' for tasks in your preferences, so Rosetta will run fewer (but longer) tasks (and therefore do the same amount of work for the project), but will require fewer downloads to do so.

To do so use: Participants (at the top of this webpage) > Rosetta@home preferences.

Yes, dcdc has explained how to continue running, and live with less monthly bandwidth. The size of downloads will be about the same, but you will require less of them each day, week and month to continue running full-time.

As for your direct question about stopping new work from coming, if you still decide this is necessary, you can just select "no new tasks" for the project. Open your BOINC Manager, go to the advanced view, projects tab, select Rosetta and click the no new tasks button. This will allow existing work to be reported back and completed, but not get anything new.

I think if the downloads are already in the transfers queue they'll be downloaded unless you select 'Network Activity Suspended' from the Activity Menu in BOINC Manager. Do you know if they were already in the queue?

That'll option will stop all network comms tho including uploading of completed tasks etc...

If the client is continuing to request work after you set NNT then your BOINC client is broken. Who knows what broke it but the easiest fix might be to reinstall BOINC. As transient points out in his message Rosetta can only send work when BOINC asks for it so it's BOINC that needs to get fixed.

But first, just to double check, what does the button say right now? Rather than indicate the current state, the buttons say what will happen when you click on them. So if button currently says "No new tasks" BOINC will continue asking for work. Restating the instructions from mod.sense:

  • highlight rosetta@home in the projects tab
  • click on "No new tasks" button
  • the button should now say "Allow new tasks"
  • a message should now appear in the status column: "won't get new tasks"

Snagletooth may be on to something there. You may have misunderstood the display and how it should look when set to no new work. Please reconfirm. I've never heard anyone else have any problems with this BOINC feature.

Once you have tasks in the queue, they will attempt to complete any downloads they need to run. I see you've been aborting tasks. That would be the thing to do. And with project set to no new tasks, it will not request any more.

Another way might be to go to the Rosetta website and change the % of time you allow Rosetta to run on your pc. Main page, Your Account, Resource Share and Graphics then the top line. Change it to 0% and see if that doesn't stop all Rosetta units form downloading to you. That effectively sets Rosetta's percentage of usable cpu time to zero.
