Hello ~ Lately, in an attempt to determine what is causing random occurrences of unresponsive applications and screen freezes, I have been running Task Manager at the bottom of my screen. ALWAYS when this happens, minirosetta_1.3, has got 99% of my cpu capacity.

I want to continue running minirosetta_1.3, however these interruptions are increasingly annoying. I see there is an option of running minirosetta_1.3 at some percent of capacity, but I notice it oscillates between 100% and 11% - not just the even 75% I set.

Is there a way of running minirosetta_1.3 to use only 75% of available processor resources evenly?

Even though it uses 100% of the CPU the app will normally get out of the way gracefully when another task needs the CPU. The main exception to this rule is if your machine does not have enough memory and it has to make use of the swap file.

In general, the symptoms you describe probably indicate that your machine is a little short of memory to handle everything you are asking it to do.

No, there isn't any way to run a task at 75% of CPU. Computers just don't work that way. So, BOINC does what it can by starting and suspending the tasks periodically. This works great if the problem you were trying to address was heat or fan noise. But, not ideal for the sluggishness you describe.

So, even at 75% or 50%, if memory is the conflict, it may not improve things much. And so another approach would be to run 50% of each day rather then 50% of every 5 seconds. You can do this by scheduling the hours of the day BOINC is allowed to run. Pick hours when you are generally not using your computer, and allow BOINC to use 100% of the CPU during that time (it still runs are low priority).

You could also tell BOINC not to run until your computer as been idle for a specified number of minutes. Probably easiest to make these settings changes in the BOINC manager in your local preferences for your machine. Otherwise you have to update to the project for changes made on the website to take effect. This makes it a little confusing to directly see cause and effect of your changes.

Thank you BOTH for taking time to reply and for your helpful comments. I have 1 GB of RAM and a P4 1.6 GHz processor, which should be ample and has never topped out. In exploring this issue further, I find the culprit to be AVG 8.0 antivirus software. Some element of this newest (recently updated) version has been locking my processor repeatedly. Uninstalling AVG 8.0 has restored my system to its customary brisk pace.
