We must have been in different Navies... I never had any medcruises like that, lol! "Not on my watch, not on my ship, not in MY NAVY !!!" Or, maybe it was something other than drugs they were talking about, lol, ... Ooh ooh I remember bongs from my US Navy days and being in the Mediterranean and having way too much access to drugs! |

We must have been in different Navies... I never had any medcruises like that, lol! No I am guessing same Navy, but as you suggest, we never did it on the ship. As for days off, those were days off and in the early and mid 70's drugs were EVERYWHERE!! Unlike Bill Clinton I did inhale and since I did not like it stopped after a few times. As the t-shirt suggests...been there, done that! |

The only thing I know about the Navy in the late 60's and early 70's is that damned fire prevention / fire fighting video they kept playing for us in the 80's/90's: (USS) Forrest(al) Fire. Pretty laid-back sailors: beards, mustaches, shirtless, etc. |

The only thing I know about the Navy in the late 60's and early 70's is that damned fire prevention / fire fighting video they kept playing for us in the 80's/90's: (USS) Forrest(al) Fire. I was a sailor from Aug '71 until Aug '77 and yes it was a different Navy from today. Yes we could go around with just t-shirts and even shirtless as long as we did not go above decks, MOST guys wore t-shirts though. As for beards, ALOT of people had them, I was a Hull Tech, a DC Man and a Shipfitter all in one, they were combined just before I went in and separated not long after I got out. Since we were also the main firefighting team we could not have beards, but most of us had mustaches. I got out of the Navy and became a full time paid firefigher for almost 24 years and now that I can grow a beard, it is grey!! I learned alot in the Navy and would not trade those experiences for anything, but got out because I did not want to make a career of it. I got out because it was re-enlistment time and they wanted to send me to a carrier. They then told me to get off the carrier I would need to re-enlist again, 6 years later! I told them what if I don't like it, I had been on a supply ship, a floating dry-dock and a destroyer at that point and the sheer size of a carrier bothered me. They told me tough, so I told them see ya! I should have been eligible for shore duty, but they told me tough. |

Never trust a recruiter, lol! Even if they put it in writing!!! Don't know about carriers. Thought I would have liked to be on one at least once for the experience. But did my time (not a career) on FF/CG/LPH. Maybe a CV would have been just too big... Anyways, got sick and tired of having a bunch of cpu's and stuff around for the past year, and not getting anything built and online... so I just went ahead and orderd a Dell XPS 9000 Core i7 920. Nothing fancy, bare bones, no oc potential. But at least an effective octocore (quadcore with HT). Better than nothing, and getting angry at seeing computer parts just laying around... |

Never trust a recruiter, lol! Even if they put it in writing!!! VERY TRUE!! Mind if I ask what the price range was? I am going to be getting money again for Christmas, I always ask for that as no one can figure out what I really want. I am thinking of an i7 or even an i9 this year. No I have not seen any i9's for sale yet but Tom's Hardware previewed one a while back, so they must be close! While an i7 has a quad core with HT an i9 has a 6 core with HT, making the pc think you have a 12 core cpu. Tom's Hardware previewed a dual core i9 machine with 24 little cpu boxes under the task manager!!!! Probably waaaaay out of my price range, but I can still dream! AND like you I have a ton of parts laying around that need to have something down with them! |

You're welcome. Hope he was able to get in on it b4 coupon expired. It was a heck-of-a deal ! No he says he needs to 'think about it' he is a procrastinator in the extreme! I did forward the newest pc to him too though. I will also call him today to make sure he reads his email again. He is not currently a cruncher but he may be if I can convince him to get a new pc. |

lol, how'd he survive the military long enough to retire, lol ??!!! He was an Officer and was in Logistics, meaning he planned the arrival of people and equipment at a given place at a given time. Since he had lots of lead time to plan he saw no need to hurry things along, ever. |

Department of Defence orders 2200 Sony PlayStation 3 for supercomputer cluster The US Department of Defense, announced that it will upgrade its supercomputer cluster with 2200 Sony’s PlayStation 3 video game console. After Sony’s latest price cut of PS3the DoD saw their chance and ordered no less than 2200 units from the video game console manufacturer. This may sound a bit odd to order thousands of video game consoles to become the backbone of the supercomputer used by the US military, but there is actually sound reasoning for it. |

Got my 4th Sony PS3 up-and-crunching for F@H. Maybe I'll think about moving one of them over to PS3Grid. Have had problems trying to use my GPU (9600gso) over at gpuGrid, so that also is crunching for F@H. Seems that Dell cancelled my order for the XPS 9000, alleging a "pricing error". Trying to work something out with them. Have had an Intel core i7 920 sitting in a box for almost the past year. Santa visited early with an Asus P6T6 mobo which has 6 PCIe 2.0 x16 slots !!! Can you say GPU crunching-monster?! He also left 6gb tri-channel ram. May write him asking for another 6gb. Now I just need to build the damn thing... Calling Mikey, where are you, lol !!! |

Got my 4th Sony PS3 up-and-crunching for F@H. Hey if I can have it I will build it!!!! WOW I hate to say this but that would have built right away here at my house. I have been buying cases on sale lately, I now have 4 empty cases sitting around waiting for stuff to put in them. That would DEFINITELY be in one of them!!! |

I got one question regarding those gaming boxes. Is it worth, to crunch with a WII? |

@Mikey - If you want to pay for the electricity to run that thing, perhaps we can discuss its loan to your "off-site" crunching location, lol !!! @Champ - So far as I know, only the PS3 gaming console can run Boinc / F@H projects. Think I recently read somewhere that someone was able to jerry-rig an xBox to "crunch", but pretty certain it was for own research, not Boinc / F@H. Haven't heard anything about a WII, I think because one of the reasons its much cheaper($) is not too much horsepower under the hood. So, I'd guess there probably won't ever be an opportunity to crunch with a WII cpu (double entendre intended)... I don't think this is the article I remember reading, but I came across it and it seems interesting enough: XBox 360 could save your life after researchers use graphics chip to investigate heart defects |
