anyone live in the PDX/Beaverton area? i am looking at the advantages of tax free shopping in oregon. but i have no idea where to go to find a good parts supplier. wish list is a AMD Phenom 9850 with the right mobo (using MSI at the moment, but had ASUS in the past)and a video card to go with it. audio is not so important as i just use a stereo system with a subwoofer by logitech on occasions. |

east coast over here, going back and forth between NY and DC. what about newegg? would that be tax free for you? they sometimes have good cpu /mobo combos, even with free shipping. |

checked that, indeed it is tax free, just shipping is 8 dollars by ups. still, if a local store can offer a cheaper price, i will go to a store. but i will order from newegg if needed. Any recomendations on a good but expensive video card? I hardly have time to play games any more and would rather watch movies on my big screen television, so I don't need high res 3d or tv features. east coast over here, going back and forth between NY and DC. |

Assume you mean "inexpensive" video card :) newegg (free shipping), of course... will a family member help out with a rebate? EVGA GeForce 8600GT 256MB Video Card $50AR |

ummmm, yeah INexpensive indeed. dang tuesday mornings. I saw that card at new egg, haven't looked into the details of that yet. Ok, then how much RAM do I need to use with a quad to make rosie happy? Is 2 enough or should I go up to 4? Any good DVD burners that are not to expensive that you know of? I have a working CD burner at the moment. I might as well buy all the parts I need now with the nice dollar exchange rate. Glad to live in the EU right now. lol Todays rate 1.59 euro to 1 greenback. Assume you mean "inexpensive" video card :) |

ummmm, yeah INexpensive indeed. dang tuesday mornings. Something to consider: any 32-bit OS can only use ~3.5GB RAM (depends on Graphics card RAM size and other things I'm not too sure of!)... HTH |

2 is enough ... but, max out the "channels" you use so that you get the maximum bandwidth ... If the MB can use 4 channel, populate it with 4 sticks of 512 M ... |

2 is enough ... but, max out the "channels" you use so that you get the maximum bandwidth ... I'm not sure that's necessary with the latest gen computers (probably due to the large caches and fast access anyway): http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/parallel-processing-RAM,review-29694-11.html I'd go for dual-channel if you can, but going for bigger DIMMs and leaving spare slots for expansion might be worth considering. |
