I have recently added a WinXPsp2/P4/512MB PC ( hostid ) to Rosetta@home, which seems to encounter this error for most WUs it crunches, e.g. wu1, wu2 etc. This PC only runs R@H, with "leave in mem"=yes. I've never encountered this error on my other PCs, but the others are all running 24/7. I wonder if it might be related to computer shutdown (BOINC runs as user process, not as service). <core_client_version>5.2.13</core_client_version> FAQ says to ignore it Q. Why am I getting a 'Reason: Access Violation (0xc0000005) error'? I assume these errors don't affect the science part, right? Could they be due to the PC shutting down (not being up 24/7)? Hi guys, I´m getting this error (0xc0000005) too on my new machine https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=1335637 Suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance! |

I think this could be memory related, it says the machine only has 512mb of memory yet you are also "leaving in memory" all paused units. I would turn that off until you add more memory, and maybe even run only one unit at a time. Boinc tries to put the whole workunit in memory when it runs, with only 512meg of memory for the whole machine and running Windows too, you have very little left over for workunits, then you are trying to save them in memory when they get swapped out too, I think that is your problem. |

Hi guys, Now I think you SHOULD have the setting set to keep swapped units in memory. You have 3.5 gig of memory and are probably trying to run 8 units all at once, right? Are you running other projects too? If so stop those for a bit and see if the Rosie units stop erroring out. |

Hi guys, Hi mikey, Thx for your fast reply! I am only running rosetta. I have already played around with some computing preferences. WU are set to "leave in mem" since yesterday, unfortunately, i still get the same error. I have also played with the number of cores to use, no change. I´m starting to think there could be some issue with hyperthreading and win xp? Unfortunately, i cannot turn it off for testing since my bios does not have that option. I will give it one more try right now. I might be missing something obvious but I´m out of ideas right now... Just in case, here are my computing preference settings: Suspend work while computer is on battery power? (matters only for portable computers) yes Suspend work while computer is in use? no 'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last 1 minutes Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last (Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers) Enforced by version 5.10.14+ --- minutes Do work only between the hours of (no restriction) Leave applications in memory while suspended? (suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') yes Switch between applications every (recommended: 60 minutes) 150 minutes On multiprocessors, use at most 4 processors Use at most Enforced by version 5.6+ 100 percent of CPU time Disk and memory usage Use at most 15 GB disk space Leave at least (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 110 GB disk space free Use at most 15% of total disk space Write to disk at most every 5 seconds Use at most 70% of page file (swap space) Use at most Enforced by version 5.8+ 90% of memory when computer is in use Use at most Enforced by version 5.8+ 100% of memory when computer is not in use Network usage Computer is connected to the Internet about every (Leave blank or 0 if always connected. BOINC will try to maintain at least this much work.) 0 days Maintain enough work for an additional Enforced by version 5.10+ 3 days Confirm before connecting to Internet? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Disconnect when done? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Maximum download rate: no limit Maximum upload rate: no limit Use network only between the hours of Enforced by version 4.46+ (no restriction) Skip image file verification? Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example). Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no If you have any more idea, please let me know. Again, thank you for you help!! |

Hi guys, "Write to disk at most every 5 seconds"...why 5 seconds? I have mine set to 900 seconds, 15 minutes. "Use at most Enforced by version 5.8+ 100% of memory when computer is not in use"...I have mine set to 90%, I am not sure if this makes any difference though. "Use at most 70% of page file (swap space)"...I have mine set to 85%, again I am not sure it makes any difference. |

Thank you for your help but unfortunately, i still get errors. The access violation (0xc0000005) errors occurs nearly in every WU but there were two other errors that occured, hopefully this allows someone to point to a possible reason: * task id 364146922 - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Illegal Instruction (0xc000001d) at address 0x00518ED1 * task id 364147006 and 364147004 I don´t understand the error but i occured after only 30s (error in zipped file?) I am looking forward to hearing any answer and again thx a lot for your help mikey! |

* task id 364147006 and 364147004 Looking at the work unit for 364147006 it looks like the other person that tried it got an error too. That usually means there was a problem with the work unit itself. A look at the work unit for 364147004 shows the same. Both of these tasks would have failed even if your system was behaving correctly. |

Both of these tasks would have failed even if your system was behaving correctly. Look at the work units and if it ends in a "1" rather than a "0" there is a possibility that you might have a problem with it. This code means that you are the second person to attempt this work unit. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. The first person may just have aborted it or have run out of time. |
